Cross-Generational Appeal

I introduced my mother to the joys of Monty Python last night. She knows who, say, George Carlin is, but had never seen anything but Monty Python's (IMVHO) least accessible film (Meaning of Life). Should have seen Holy Grail or Life of Brian instead.

Anyway, she was treated to dead parrots, homicidal barbers who pine to be lumberjacks, Mr Gumby, the ( Read more... )

'moist' vs 'used' k_in_sf September 3 2007, 17:06:54 UTC
I don't mind either word (although 'moist' is one of my best friend Kristi's most-hated words of all time, funnily enough. She also hates 'delicious'.). Moist cakes are a Very Good Thing. Yum. Used CDs are Also Good. And there's a nice quote from My So-Called Life, where Rayanne tells Angela that her lips look "used... but in a good way," (after Ange has been snoggin' Jordan Catalano). I like 'used' in that context.

I still watch the VHS tapes you made for me of MSCL regularly. I freakin' love that show.

I do know one of your "word aversion" phrases though: "making love".

My mother doesn't get Monty Python, but my dad and I cackle like loons every time we watch. And quote it to one another quite frequently. The dead parrot sketch is a particular favorite, and of course the Mr. Gumby series. They got me the entire series on DVD a few years ago. Best gift ever!

I think one thing we quote the most is Confuse-a-Cat. Mainly because we have cats ourselves.

How could I forget Confuse-A-Cat? Now I have to go hunt it down and watch it all over again!

Yay, Monty Python! I'm getting in the mood to watch my series DVDs again (I have all but the last half season after John left, which I didn't like).

Moist!

You'll have to introduce Mom to Fawlty Towers next, she'll probably love that one, too.

I love Brit-coms, so much that many of the latest American sitcoms are more annoying than funny to me now. Go figure. I've been spoiled.

Are we saying that *all* British comedy is better than its American counterparts? Because that would include stuff like "Good Neighbors," "Dad's Army," Benny Hill, the Carry On films, "Up Pompeii," "Are You Being Served," "Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps," etc. etc ( ... )

Oh no, I was speaking in general terms.

Though I didn't mind Good Neighbors or AYBS?, I wouldn't rank them as highly as Monty Python or Blackadder, ever. As for the others, I either am unfamiliar with them or disliked them.

Conversely, there are bound to be amusing American sitcoms, but none that I've seen recently.

I like American television and British television equally. What irritates me is when American TV tries to ape British TV or vice versa, like you mentioned with the American version of Coupling, or with the new version of Doctor Who (and Torchwood), two shows that clearly want to be like Buffy:TVS and Angel. (A lot of people seem to love the new Doctor Who. I think it's awful.)

I actually used to love "Are You Being Served" as well, but now I feel like chucking something at the TV every time I hear the theme music.

I haven't seen Torchwood, Coupling (either) or any "recent" spisodes of AYBS?, so I can't speak to those.

For all I know, recent British television is plagued by the same ills as recent American television; namely, that 90% of it is crap. :)
