A brief author's commentary on the fic, A Thousand Beautiful Things.

I thought this fic warranted a little additional note because I have received a fair bit of feedback on the surprisingly cracky plot for what, in essence, is not a crack!fic at all. Well, there's a reason for that.

The inspiration for this story was taken from a plot-bunny/challenge that was posted on the site that no longer exists, BJ Fic.net. They had a whole section for people to post plotbunnies they wanted to see brought to life, and one day while I was scrolling through it I found one that was very detailed and requested Brian with anger-issues and mute!Justin meeting in a mental institution. Basically I read it and laughed because the whole thing sounded waaaay out there. Then, of course, somehow the plot got stuck in my brain.

Unfortunately, I can't give credit to the source of inspiration for this bunny because BJFic (in it's original form) is gone, and so are the original files I had for this fic, but essentially this is an answer to a challenge. The essence of the story from the asylum, Brian's reason for being there, Justin being mute, and the secret Justin!abuse by an orderly and subsequent resolution thereof, were all encompassed in the challenge. Liberty, Justin's past history and Gus grew out of my attempts to exorcise this idea that would not let me be. As crazy as the plot sounded I wanted to see if there was a way to un-crackify it and I'd like to think that, insofar as a fic where basically everyone is in a mental institution can be, it's pretty un-cracked.

The title came from Annie Lennox's song of the same name that I forgot I knew when I started writing, and then realized I had lifted the title from sort of retro-actively, after I had already posted about three chapters. At which time I tracked the song down and had it on a tracklist that I listened to throughout the creation of this fic.

I hope you liked it, even if it is a little 'out there'!
I certainly loved writing it.
