Two questions in one!

Like a lot of people, I live in a rented house that has an incredibly ugly, dated kitchen. Beige, beige, grey and more beige is the predominant colour scheme and it hurts! Obviously we can't paint or rip out anything major, but I'd like some suggestions on how to funk it up a bit ( Read more... )

Cabinet handles: try hardware stores, and also - Ebay! (You'd be surprised what you can get from Ebay, I was actually looking at drawer handles on there the other night.)

I was going to suggest a wall sticker too...

I know when we subletted once, the lady stuck up strips of wallpaper with blutac. She shouldn't have done it, but it did make the place look fresher. Maybe you can go to somewhere that sells that kind of thing just for inspiration.

Would love to see before and after pics of what can be achieved in a rental ;)

Good idea! I'll definitely take pics if I end up doing anything to it.

You could check out Reverse Garbage in West End. It's doubtful you'd find enough of the same knobs there though. I once found the most incredible door handles there and bought them even though I didn't have anything to use them on. I still have them and still love them. One day I will ...

It's also a good place (for me at least) to find little odds and ends to help spruce up my place. For example, I got pieces of tile from there and made coasters out of them. It has the added bonus of being very cheap. You have to go every now and then because the stock is constantly changing and sometimes you get lucky and find something really cool.

Oh and ... I've covered my wall with a large & colourful sarong. West End markets sometimes has some really nice large coverings (meant for the bed but I've used them for wall coverings ... but since you're looking to do something in the kitchen, you could easily adapt nice material to a window - provides a nicer focal point.

Our kitchen (also in a rental house) is nothing but WHITE. Splashes of color does wonders.
