Carindale's probably too far, but I think I'll give the UQ dentist a call tomorrow and see when they can fit me in for a check up.

Dr Chahoud of Spring Hill - he did my wisdom teeth six months ago and the surgery cost about $2000 for all four teeth plus anaesthetic (which is about $400 claimable from Medicare) - and mine were way overdue for removal (by a painful year)

Can you claim wisdom teeth extractions on medicare? I'm going to have to get mine taken out soon, but I don't have private health cover at all and am worrying about how to afford it...

I get the impression you can claim anesthetic but nothing else. But this is just from what people on here & other friends have said.

Unfortunately, like most places I called, they were booked out for a few weeks.

OMG how bizarre my wisdom teeth have been giving me grief this week too! Started off just being the top right one, then bottom left followed by the other two at some point today... Good week! I was thinking, would it be worth getting private health insurance to take on some of the costs?

So far it's just my bottom left one but man it hurts! It's painful to swallow even. Also makes it hard to concentrate at work all day when you're on painkillers!

I don't really understand private health insurance but it doesn't often seem like they give you much back!!!

And there's all those waiting periods before you can get money back...

Yup, I used to work for MBF and IMO, you're way better off putting the money you would spend in premiums into a savings account instead. It's a 12 month waiting period for major dental. I did customer service and the lack/smallness of refund for wisdom teeth removal was probably the most common complaint!

Incidentally, once you've had a check up, you can ask your dentist for a quote (with tooth numbers) for any dental work that needs doing - and then phone around for a quote from other other dentists.

That's kind of what I've always thought about private health insurance. I guess long term it could be worth while but who knows. Everyone I know who's had their wisdom teeth out just paid for it themselves.
