the only female personal trainers that I used to use unfortunately were muscled out by FF at the Valley - they were awesome and you could do either a PT session or a group session (like boxing or cardio circuits etc) which were very reasonable.
like I said, they were unfortunately muscled out by FF as they were located in the building next to the Wickham hotel (next to the train station).
Considering the high rents that gyms have to pay in the CBD I think its unlikely that you'll find a cheap deal in the city or fringe. Its actually stopping new gyms from entering the CBD market because it rent is not sustainable for them, given their high set up costs.
I go to Genesis at Windsor (short walk from the train station) and find the facilities and the staff to be excellent. I go to the trouble to get there even though I live in the CBD because the experience is SOOO much better. it is less than 12 months old and all the equipment is top notch and nearly new.
I have heard that Pure Health Clubs http://www.purehealthclubs.com.au/ are not bad, they are upstairs in the mall. They didn't really suit me but might work for you.
That place sounds really good, but how's it in terms of cost and contract? The facilities seem good but it seems like all the gyms come down to cost and contract...
The Windsor club is good, not sure about the other locations, they have different owners. I pay $60 p/month no contract. They will do you a deal as they are keen to build up their membership. However they are capping it so its never going to be too busy. I can think of only one occasion when I've had to wait. There is a ladies only area and no meatheads looking down their nose at you. Alot of the members are older and I've never experienced any of the 'looks' or snide remarks that you get at some gyms. The owners are friends of mine and are very focussed on providing a good experience for their members.
Having said all of that, you will only get your moneys worth from any gym if you are really committed to it. Without that it will always be a waste of money.
There's a Goodlife gym in the Wintergarden. I've been to the one at Graceville and they are nice enough. It's coed though.
I was originally at Fernwood at Toowong, and while I admit it boosted my confidence, I eventually got tired of a lot of the "bitchiness" that I found there.
I know this isn't what you're asking, but as someone who lost 25 kilos in a year, I can tell you this: gyms didn't work for me. They don't work for a lot of people. The atmosphere can be awkward and uncomfortable if you're in any way shy or body-conscious and not only do you have to motivate yourself to excercise, you have to motivate yourself to actually GET there. I've known countless people who've joined up and then found themselves stuck in expensive contracts long after they've decided that gyms aren't for them
( ... )
was that with healthy diet too I assume? Im lookin to lose 15-20kg.
Im one of those people that has to spend $700 to get out of my gym contract, and yet Iv been once :( mainly because it's inconvenient with where it is, I get home too late already and mostly I get too self conscious.
Yeah, healthy diet too. Nothing extreme (especially none of that no-carbs BS - you'll lose weight fast but put it all back on again just as quickly!)
Just cutting out stuff like soft drinks and juice, little to no chocolate, and so on. I was still able to have takeout now and then (smaller serves, like getting a Happy Meal at Maccas instead of a Big Mac meal) and I didn't have to eat any differently than anyone else for the other meals of the day. It's mostly just commonsense + persistance, as a healthy diet works slowly.
Oh, and I found that snacking on healthy little things during the day - apples, unsalted nuts, etc - really helped, rather than having three BIG meals per day.
