Yikes!! How fortunate/lucky/great/wonderful that the wheel fell off where and when it did (assuming it was going to happen at some point). That could have been a disaster! I am happy that all are safe and unhurt.

Were there any small warning signs of which we should be aware?

There were supposed to be warning signs! Everything and everybody says you should have rattling, shaking, something to tell you there's a problem, but not the 4Runner...just kept going until the ball joint went. I suspect it was age. It has almost 220K miles on it!

Well there are drug lords, terrorists and third world militaries all over the world using 4Runners for a reason! You can pound them into the ground, fix them up and do it again for several more years. It's a very good beardiemobile :-)
