2x2 weaves and speedy puppy Eri

I've been taking Eri down to My Dog's Gym to work through 2x2s with Eri and a couple other instructors and their dogs before incorporating it into my process for teaching.  I tried reading the explanation but I'm really much better at learning something by doing it than by reading about it :-)  It's fairly intuitive so far.  Now I just have to ( Read more... )

I ran all three dogs (cocker, border collie, mini aussie) through the 2x2 system when I was training Roper on the weaves. All three are fast weavers. I found that if I put the second set closer to the first set (more like 8 to 6 feet) rather than 12', it was easier for the dog to drive through the second set without turning to look at me, especially Roper, who has the least amount of experience. I also did the "reward between the two sets" only about once every 10 or more reps, which helped with stopping the looking.

I have thoroughly enjoyed using this system, and I think the dogs did too. It was fun and easy to follow. I don't think that I'd switch back to another system, though I did use some channel poles with Roper which most closely resemble 2x2's right before they are aligned. I am going back through the program to rework entries with Mayzie and Roper. Zorro's correct entry rate has gone from about 50-60% to over 85%.

I wondered about that, but Judi said that in the video they were saying 12' for big dogs to start. When I pick up Heidi's set, I will experiment a bit. I don't have that many small dogs in my classes, but I'll read back through your entries to see how Roper did with his.

the 2X2 s are loaded in the van, I found the DVD's and my copy of all Susan Garrett's weave exercises that she sold a couple of years ago. I think it falls with in the 'personal use' to loan you my copy, eh? Anyway, I'll leave them at MDG tonight.
