She said that, "in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman..."

Honey, it ain't your country; it's ours. And far, far too many of us disagree with what you just said, far too many of us refuse to deny our friends and family and people we love the same rights that "we" are handed free and ( Read more... )

bri, respectfully...in my country, the one I spent 8 yrs in the Air Force protecting and defending, the one that my husband has been in the AF for 13 yrs doing the same including a tour in Afghanistan...in my country we have the right of free speech. We have the right to say what we believe even when it is not palatable and be judged by the marketplace of public opinion and taken down by the power of the almighty dollar. Neither side of the political spectrum are immune to these two instruments wielded by the American Public. And thank goodness for that!

Just, well, no one should tout the downfall of the runner up for a beauty pagaent and complain about California's Prop 8 vote. The will of the people, such that it is, spoke in both cases.

(for the record, before I get lambasted for this, I personally believe that gay and lesbian couples should have completely equal rights to be married and be protected in the same manner legally as het couples. exclusionary politics, social agendas, religions, etc frustrate and anger me to no

bwaaa! saying it is free speech. expecting me to buy into the idea that people voting one way is somehow wrong because they did not vote the way we wanted them to is silly. they, um, voted.sorry! I knew what I meant when I said that but I am not sure I was as clear as I could be!

Oh, absolutely we do. Which is why I say she had every right to say what she did, and to believe it (no matter how I wrong I personally think she is).

We have the right to say what we believe even when it is not palatable and be judged by the marketplace of public opinion and taken down by the power of the almighty dollar. And this is exactly what happened to her - she opened her mouth and was judged on what she said ( ... )

That was a prime example of someone not having the wherewithal to think first. She's right to her beliefs, but certainly there could have been a more ... diplomatic way to put it. AT THE VERY LEAST.

This is it exactly. Throwing a "no offense to anyone" in there implies that she knew she'd just offended a whole bunch of people and was trying to cover her ass. It's the same as saying something stupid online and trying to cover it by throwing a :) at the end.

Being the contestant from California, where this is a huge political hotbed issue, she should have been prepared to answer a question about it without stepping on anyone's toes, and she wasn't.

Matt Lauer asked Perez if he thought that the Miss USA pageant is becoming less about objective things like physical beauty and more about subjective things like politics and religion, and Perez said that he hoped not because religion and politics really have no place in a beauty contest ( ... )
