You're way ahead of me. I still haven't figured out why wanting something good for everyone instead of the select few privileged with wealth is somehow a bad thing.

*hugs*

It is pretty disheartening to hear that you're doing charitable works "wrong". Seems impossible, unless that "wrong" means skimming from the funds to buy a yacht.

I read one comment a few days ago that said something along the lines of some charity in the Pacific Northwest was so much better than so many others because they have this shiny new building and their employees are always dressed in expensive suits and drive fancy cars.

And I'm just sitting here thinking, "How many children could that building have fed? How many starved to death during the construction because their 'needs assessment' just didn't stand up to the need to have a fancy new office?"

So a charity takes in $57 million in contributions, and the only spend $4 million on salaries and expenses. Great! Why not spend that $4 million feeding people?

That's the part I don't get. And I actually am finding that I have a rather low opinion of people who make their money that way. How many blankets could they buy with the money a new Lexus costs them? How many children could be fed and educated for a year on what they spend on their house payment every month?

Orphanages ARE bad. I don't have a lot of experience with them as a general rule, but the orphanages in Eastern Europe are notoriously horrible. I have met with kids from an orphanage in Bulgaria and they were awful because they get no positive influence from anyone. About 95% of them, by my estimate, are Roma and subject to the most egregious discrimination and racism that I have ever seen. It doesn't matter that these are just children, non-Roma aren't going to give a shit because why waste your effort on the dirty gypsies ( ... )

I agree wholeheartedly. And I'll even throw in that the orphanages in the US are terrible (and yes, I do still consider them orphanages, even with all those fancy names we have for them). I've never lived in one myself, but most of my best friends from childhood spent time in one sort of "group home" or another, and they were all awful. The lack of love and stability was just the beginning. And this was with the government and/or big-name charity organizations running things ( ... )

Thank you bb. Probably people are already calling me an asshole for saying that, of course. :\

A+ post, bb.

Haters to the left. I love what Misha's doing and everyone doing it with him.

Personally, I think he's amazing. C-List or not, he's trying to make the world a better place to live, and he's inspiring a whole shitload of people to do the same.

I can't ever disagree with that. I just can't.

See, here's the thing I don't think very many people actually understand. It's not about changing the system, or saving the whole of Haiti, or saving the world. It's about saying, "We can make sure these particular kids have food tonight."

And that's not even where the bulk of the donations are going. Those are going to make life better for people who aren't suffering from a major disaster.

I mean, seriously, we're not UNICEF or CARE or OXFAM. We're not trying to save the world. We're just trying to make it a better place to live in.

I think I'm in love with you...I think I also agree with everything said here - but then again, what do I know? I can actually think for myself and must be looked down upon and felt sorry for cause I ain't waiting for Jesus to help me or a beaur-o-rat to tell me what to think.

*Hugs you hard*

You go girl!! I'm proud of you!
