I do correct people, but I'm nice about it. In my job, I have a semi-teacherly role, and I've had several students thank me for steering them in the correct direction. As for more social situations, usually I try to phrase it as asking for clarification, again, very politely.
Out of curiosity, what do you do? When I was teaching, I always tried to find the kindest and least invasive way to correct people. What troubles me most is when it interrupts the flow of what the person is saying, so asking for clarification is a really good way to do that, I think.
What do I do as a job? I am a reference desk assistant at an academic library. I help students to start their research and more generally, to use the library's resources.
Basically unless it's something harmful to someone I'll let it go unless it's a close friend or family member and even some family members it's best not to make waves.

I'm with you on the harmful thing. I knew someone who would often mix up carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide when discussing raising indoor plants. That could be a fatal difference.
