You noticed the gradient! It's actually a sort of impressionistic picture quilt, a landscape: sunset sky at the top, then mountains, trees, vegetation, and finally flowers at the bottom. The quilting is meant to give the impression of these things: mountain-ish shapes in the mountain section, flower shapes in the flowers. Piecing the 9-patches so they go together nicely can be hard, but having the image in mind made it an unusually easy process.
It is comfy, too--the cottony-est feeling of the 3 quilts I've made. :-) I loved your comment, and I'm so glad you love the quilt!
