What a great story. John doing the best he can, and knowing he's not doing everything right, but still trying - it's the way I picture he probably was when the boys were so young.
Ah, great icon. Poor John--I figure Sam and Dean's dogged persistence at trying to do the right thing even when it always seems to fail must have come from somewhere ...
I really liked this one. It's really cool how much this single event reveals so much about their characters and future relationship of the family members. And so interesting to see the genesis of their various complexes and ways of thinking, especially Dean, where you can already see how important family is to him.
I find Sam really believable here, especially when he says 'I'm living here now'. I remember being as stubborn as that when I was kid.
It was really interesting to read how John had hope that Sam & Dean would a normal life once they'd killed the demon. I suppose that hope must have eventually worn away after all those years of searching with no results. And I liked John's characterisation, you could see he was trying to do the best he could in raising the boys but also recognising where he'd failed them.
I'm glad you remember being as stubborn as that, too! Apparently when I was in kindergarten, I suddenly decided I wasn't going to go to school anymore, and my mother had to regale me with dire threats to make me go again.
Re: the normal life--that really struck me too, getting into his mindset and realizing that he probably never thought he'd condemn them to a whole life lived like that. One year grew into the next, and the next, and suddenly they're adults.
Oh no, really?? They've done that more and more as the series has progressed, and I think it's a shame, because he clearly loved his boys more than anything. (Nice pic in your icon! Where did you meet him?)
Really liked this. Nice to read from John's POV and his struggle trying to do the right thing and just sucking at it! Loved the depictions of the boys too, mini versions with Sam bringing armageddon and Dean a better hunter than his Dad. Very canny : ) x
