YEEES. Plus, I tend to believe someone less and less the more they brag about how much this or that they are. ;-)
I love outsider POV for just that reason! It's sort of a way of illuminating Sam and Dean (and John) in a deeper way than they might even go into themselves, since to them all this is just normal ....
I know that when I was in high school, I was incredibly selfish and self centered, as well as reckless. I can only imagine that Dean would struggle with the same things. Really interesting portrait of the dynamics of this group.
Aww, thanks! The ending kind of made me sad for Dean, but on the other hand, what about Sam, you know? And we all know Dean tends to make some iffy choices. Thanks for the comment. :-)
Yeah, my friend pointed out that Dean IS taking care of Sam here--in the only way he knows how: that is to say, exactly how John takes care of them.
Dean is such a deliciously complex character. It killed me to end the story like that, because though I think it was right for the story, I feel like poor Dean had to suppress so much of himself in order to force himself to be so very responsible for Sam--I don't think it comes naturally to him. He has the hyper-responsible side, and the live-for-the-moment caution-to-the-wind side, which imo are both reactions to how hard his father was on him about Sam. Seriously, I think I could happily discuss the complexities of Dean's character here for pages. :-)
I also LOOOVE the socially awkward aspect in outsider POV of their odd upbringing. If you're keen for more of the same, you might like this fic, although they're adults in that one--still, they blab about stuff they really shouldn't with the pov character
