http://yuki-onna.livejournal.com/509086.html One of my favorite authors, Catherynne M. Valente (she wrote the stunning Palimpsest), stands up for fantasy writers who are often "looked down upon" by some science fiction writers and readers.
There oughtn't even be a debate, really. Yet I recall being told off rather thoroughly when I suggested both genres be combined under the heading "Speculative Fiction" - which would keep the SF. It makes more sense anyway, given how much overlap there is between the genres and the fact that most bookstores and libraries keep science fiction and fantasy in the same area, if not intermingled.
I agree. I actually prefer to write speculative fiction or science fantasy, since I love mixing genres. It bothers me that people are out there who think mixing science fiction and fantasy is a bad thing!
Ohh, interesting! I've never read her, but I may have to start.
One o the things I found most interesting at the panel I went to was a mention of how Fantasy, like Sci-Fi, comes in both Hard and Soft varieties, but that few people realize this and tend to categorize it all as Soft. It made so much sense.

And I agree, wholeheartedly.
