Yay! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I tried to get in as many canon references as possible, and I'm so please you picked up on them. Otsu and hungry ronin FTW! And yeah, Nathan totally flew. It's the only way I could work it into the fic. If we were in Vietnam, there'd be helicopters, and thus potential to fall out of them, but WWII... much less flight potential, sadly.

Suprise!Peter :) Yeah, you thought it wasn't going to be him, eh? Fooled you! How could I resist putting poor heroic Peter into the war? He was made to do stupidly heroic things, I tell ya. Well, I mean, until he accidentally gets himself killed...

OMG! I've been so scared for Peter. And Nathan... wow... this story is fantastic.

Thanks so much! Peter does tend to get himself into scrapes...

Oh, man. I love this so far, especially how well Nathan's state of mind (and the war atmosphere!) comes across so early and so well -- his sense of slight unreality, exhaustion, a type of confusion, and the responsibility of having to make decisions about people's lives. This part especially was very real, and very touching:

If Nathan thought too much about it, he wouldn’t be able to make decisions. He wouldn’t be able to send men to danger, maybe to their death if he thought that somewhere in this desolate mess, another commanding officer was thinking of his Peter as nothing but another warm body to throw in front of the enemy.

:( So sad! I loved the little flashbacks to him and Peter together, and how torn Nathan was with him, wanting to push him away.

Military mindset is always interesting to write. I'm so used to thinking of Nathan as a political animal that I forget he was a soldier first! And WWII was a horrible time for everyone, which was a different and fascinating thing to explore for me with these characters. Originally there weren't going to be flashbacks, but I just had to get Peter more in there somewhere, not just in the letters... I can't live without my Peter!
