that's one hell of dangerous game he's playing "for the good of the realm"
You are not wrong! I'm sure Mycroft has been breaking into the booze and cigarettes more than usual recently...

Um... well, maybe a bit. Anyway, you're right about communication making a big difference in these couples. Even though Mycroft and Lestrade have been together much longer, they face some difficulties that Sherlock and John have managed to avoid. Whether that makes things easier for one couple or the other, we'll just have to see! Mwah ha ha!

that means John's self preservation instincts are somewhere around the level of a rabid mongoose, which is admirable in an insane kind of way.
The irony is that. although J doesn't see it M is a modern and liberal master; the whole set up is horrific, but M treats his slaves as well as their society allows.

Good point you make! John has no reason to trust this guy, and so far every interaction he's had with John has been less than pleasant. But John's not really one to knuckle under in that kind of situation, though; that's the rabid-mongoose instincts at worse.
And yes, Mycroft seems to be trying to do his best within a severely problematic system. But glad you're enjoying their interactions!
