Authors' notes: Beta'd by
redandglenda, who rocks our socks off. Written for
sncross_bigbang. This is a sequel to
The Secret's in the Telling. Prior knowledge of that story is encouraged, but not necessary for your enjoyment here. If you haven't read it, here's the gist: Dean and Sam were thrown together with Peter and Nathan Petrelli, two brothers with unusual secrets, to track down a demon that was threatening them both. In the course of the investigation, they learned that they weren't the only evil-fighting brothers with a (ehem) close relationship.
Summary: Sam and Dean discover demons have been possessing people with special abilities that have nothing to do with magic. Peter draws a future that reunites him and Nathan with the Winchester brothers. Together they find out that specials--people whose powers come from an unusual inherited gene-- are being targeted for possession by a woman who is on the verge of breaking one of the sixty-six seals.

I've never collaborated on a fic before. And in fact, I can be kind of bossy. So
jaune_chat deserves all the props in the world for a) wanting to play in the world of Secret's in the Telling, b) being flexible enough to cater to my control-freak-ness and c) bringing all sorts of awesome ideas to the table. Look kids, cooperating is fun!
In fact,
jaune_chat had mentioned to me sometime ago that she had a plot bunny for continuing the universe of The Secret's in the Telling. It seemed a shame, said she, to waste a perfectly good setup of Winchester and Petrelli crossover. However, we both have a lot of other fic irons in the fire, so the project languished a few months. When it came time for
sncross_bigbang we had the excuse (and the kick in the ass) we'd been waiting for. I signed us up. Then panicked.
As you may know from reading previous stuff of mine, I tend to write things not at all in order. I'll scribble down scenes as they come to me. In this case, when another author was involved, it was hard to keep track of the logic of the plot and the arcs of the characters when we were both writing different parts. Eventually we put together a wiki where we could post scenes as we wrote them and make our own notes on things like character arcs, continuity, and existing canon from both the show and Secret's in The Telling. (Look, Heroes writers, we cared about consistency!) The wiki turned out to be amazingly useful, and I'm so glad we took the time to keep ourselves organized that way.
We outlined the story on the wiki until the skeleton of a story emerged. There were many late-night phone calls and frenzied G-chat sessions. We both wrote during our work day (or night) and transcribed stuff to the wiki as we were able, which sometimes led to repetition or total confusion. My favorite instance of this is a scene that we actually cut, but we both wrote Peter as teleporting to the hospital where he did his nursing internship, since it was the most familiar place he could think of in a bind. Similar wavelengths, we has them.
Once the bulk of the story was sequenced on the wiki, we moved it to a shared Google doc so we could see where the holes were. We patched, shifted, and cut from there. We stayed on the phone together and talked through edits.
redandglenda beta'd her little heart out and told us what needed fixin'.
xkelorosiamano showed us drafts of her art, and we started to get really excited.
So here's the result. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed working on it. Hooray Big Bang!
Art
Have I mentioned yet how awesome the art is? You may have already seen the banners for each part, but there's more! Posters and icons and more banners! Oh my! Seriously,
xkelorosiamano deserves mad props for the lovely art, so go
check it all out and tell her how awesome she is.
Bonus Features
There's a whole mess of stuff that didn't quite make it into the final version. This includes deleted scenes and also... an orgy.
