Life outside of time

Jul 05, 2012 21:47

Now in the third week of my vacation I allow my body to wake and sleep at will, and as has happened to me every time I've had this luxury I go to sleep sometime between 3:30 and 4 in the morning and wake up att 11 (which actually means I am sleeping fewer hours  than when I have to go to bed according to a work schedule). Most days I don't need or ( Read more... )

What you should do is look for a job in a place that matches the hours you want to be up in Sweden, since I don't think you want to move to China, Russia, or southeast Asia. Perhaps you are in sync with the work zone in the Canadian Maritime Provinces, or the more early riser parts of the eastern US.

I am also a night owl and am already savoring the next two weeks when I don't have to set the alarm (well, one day but not as early as usual). The flip side is how awful it's going to be when those two weeks of vacation are over and that alarm starts going off at 6am.

Be sure to check out the link torapines left in a later comment. Evidence that getting up at 6am is just WRONG for some of us :-)

Kazakstahn, Kyrgizistan and the region of Russia soutounding Yekataerinburg. I fear that the telecommunication infrastructure there isn't good enough for you to eork from there.

Although Inida comes fairly close (½h wrong) and have several cities with should work very well for that purpose.

Unless I'm wrong, Greenland has rather depressing rates of suicidal people. I don't know if Geena's profession works with such matters, but if she does, it might be a perfect career move: qualified work duties and the hours she loves. At least in the summer time, I don't know if staying up to 3 AM in the pitch dark winter is as desired.

Björn also worked out for me that I could work in the places you name. Given the choice I'll stay here in beautiful Sweden and rearrange my natural sleep patterns when I'm not on vacation. (And, nope, working with suicidal people isn't something I do or want to do.)

I suspect that you too are a night owl - am I right?

Okay, first of all, yes, yes yes! Me too! You could work with me! Well, I mean, if we were in the same time zones. Because we are clearly on similar internal times.

And second...look! Look what I found just this morning!!

Every night owl on the planet knows instinctively that what he says is correct.

In my program we work with teenagers who get into trouble with the law. Most of them also have high levels of truancy - very often because they cannot get up in the mornings in time for school (or to bed early enough to get any sleep). It's one of the most common behaviors we have to tackle. And this guy's studies aren't the first to suggest that teenagers have biological reasons behind their "laziness". Swedish schools are generally pretty good about adjusting individual schedules to help these teens have some success in school.

Now if I remember correctly you pretty much set your own hours? If so, do you let your inner night owl fly free?

I have always felt instinctively it was odd to assume an entire planet full of humans would somehow all just coincidentally have the same exact natural schedule. But if you feel that way, it’s likely you’ve tried explaining it to someone else and they’ve looked at you as if you were a) mentally ill or b)making excuses for your own laziness. If I hear one more person say, “You just have to go to bed/get up earlier ( ... )
