It should be used cautiously, but it has some place. We have to group things to make sense of the world when we don't have an individual in front of us or something applies to more than one individual.

Treating groups abstractly, when talking about nobody in particular, may be useful, and even beneficial, in some contexts. It is when we see a group identity when looking at an individual that evil manifests. It is when we see ourselves more as cogs in the machinery of some group than as autonomous, responsible individuals then we have made an ethical error. It is when we believe that groups are more important than the individuals whom they were created to benefit that we lose our humanity.
