Way back in middle school (I think it was seventh grade?) we had a girl in my school whose family was from France. She wasn’t exactly an exchange student, but she kinda was. I know this sad. We had a British army band visit the Presidio. back when I was stationed there. Great bunch of guys, fantastic musicians. Some of them were blown up in an IRA bomb attack in 1982. :(

Terrorists strike at the heart of normalcy, and in the days of "six degrees of separation" chances are increasing that people find connections to these acts of nihilism. A friend of mine was blown up on the streets of Kandahar; the Russian military attache with whom I negotiated a treaty in Vienna was killed in the Nord-Ost theatre in Moscow, with his wife and daughter. I've had friends mark themselves "safe" on Facebook from Paris, Brussels, Ankara and Istanbul. There are days when it seems like an onslaught... :-(
