I am heartbroken. Absolutely devastated. France played so well, dominating most of the second half and the first fifteen minutes of extra time, and to lose in that moment. I am just heartbroken

Exactly. He's no Beckham. He's not a hotheaded, brash, aggressive player. After beating Portugal, he went up to Figo, hugged him and they exchanged shirts. When he scores, he doesn't do a victory lap or anything. He just quietly resumes play.
I fully believe the Italian player said something extremely offensive to him. Cause that's just not Zidane.
Exactly. He's the son of Algerian immigrants, born and raised in the ghetto suburbs of Marseille. That kind of upbringing would certainly make one very sensitive to any kind of racial/ethnic remark.
That was a bad finale. France should have won, they were by far the better team. I don't wanna know what the Italian player had said to Zidane, to make Zidane attack him so badly. It must have been something more than rude. It's so sad that his career ends like this.
Italy played a better game in the first half, but, by far, France played a better game overall. And then, they lost it. Italy played excellent defense, I have to give them that. And they got 5/5 on the shootout. But France played better.
And Zidane. His brilliant career is going to be marred by this. And as inexcusable as that headbutt was, it must have been awful for Zidane to snap and retaliate in such a manner.
I'm not sure I believe that's the cause. I saw the Italian player messing with Zidane. And it was a good bit after that, when Zidane headbutted him. Meanwhile, the Italian player was still talking to him.
It's just fairly uncharacteristic of Zidane. And I don't think he'd risk being red carded in the last minutes of play during a World Cup finale. Nor would he risk disgracing his career so spectacularly. Not for a nipple tweaking. That I don't believe.
yeah I doubt it too, although people do lose it sometimes and don't think about consequences. But yeah, I don't like football particularly but someone on my flist posted that article and I thought it was amusing.
Well, if the article were true, my esteem for Zidane would be significantly less. However, I just can't conceive of him risking that much over something like that. But since I don't know the guy personally, I can't really say with any kind of certainty.
Whatever he said, it was obviously horrid enough to cause a great player to disgrace himself. It's been said that he was particularly sensitive to remarks about being Maghrebin, which I can understand, particularly since he grew up in the suburbs of Marseille as an Algerian.
Oddly enough, during the match, I once said "à ta mère". I forget when and why. But you know. It's what's said.
Oh, no. I was just devastated right after. But now, not so much. I'm disappointed, of course. But the game is lost and there's nothing to do. I'm not at all pissed with Italy for winning. So, there is absolutely no need to feel badly. And don't feel pained.
Football, however, won't be my favourite topic. *sigh*

Watching the replay, they were even laughing as they started to walk away... One on earth could he have said to have gotten that response from Zidane.
Such a shame :(

*hugs you and Zidane* I'm sure he'd love to be consoled by you, though. :)

I'm not sure anyone can console Zidane at this point, except maybe his wife and kids. Ah, well. And I've dealt with the loss.
Otherwise, how are you? How can I reach you? I miss you. *massive hugs*
