Entertainment: Am I Jaded, Bored, Burnt Out or Something Else?

Apr 16, 2012 15:39

So this movie called The Cabin in the Woods came out recently, and tons of my friends -- people I love, respect and have many of the same opinions on entertainment -- are thrilled to see it, and are also telling me I need to see it. I know Joss is involved with it (love him). I know Drew Goddard is involved in it (adore him). I know Amy Acker is in ( Read more... )

Really, there is no SHOULD. Well sort of. I don't think you should ever feel compelled to watch something you find uninteresting. There are probably some things (*cough*Firefly*cough*) that one SHOULD try watching, but even that ... if you don't like it, you should feel no compulsion to watch. It's entertainment! If it's not entertaining ... don't do it!

I still really enjoy Dexter (though we're always at least a season behind) and quite enjoy Castle, and I enjoy Once Upon a Time, etc., but if you don't care, hey, more time for you to do other things!

Totally agree with you on the whole should thing. I guess I also wrote this out to explain it to myself as well. :) And yeah, more time for other things, yay! :)

Our tastes change. I'm dismayed to find my feelings toward SUPERNATURAL have dimmed so much. I LIVED for that show! I still write for www.Moogi.com and Winchester Family Business, but my enthusiasm and love for the show just aren't as intense. Like you, I still watch TV, but only a few programs, by comparison. I used to have a hard time filling two DVRs. Now, one suffices.

My back pain has become just awful, and no doctor has offered anything but strong drugs to help me. I don't want drugs. I want a cure.

At least my shrink came up with a two-drug cocktail that brought my depression under control. I was beginning to think THAT was never going to happen!

Love,
Robin

I know a lot of folks whose love for SPN has dwindled significantly, but I'm not one of 'em. ;)

I'm sorry about your back, but I understand the aversion to using medication. :(

But yay depression control! :)

It happens to us all, Brian. Not to worry. My love of some shows have changed, and then I get into new shows. But I'm getting in to SO much more stuff because my blog is about well, geek in general and there are SO many things I can geek out about.

But I want to learn more about video games and comics...

Don't even stress. You like what you like, when you like it.

BTW, if you like Black Adder, have you seen Black Books? It's hilarious.

Hugs,
Jackie

Heh, I tried having a general geek blog, but found that, for me, it was too unfocused. Having it be on one specific area is working out much better for me. I might be able to help ya with video games. Comics...only if it's Batman, really. ;)

Not stressing, just...explaining I guess. To myself as well.

I've seen the first series of Black Books and LOVED it, totally need to see the rest.

Haha, it's the opposite for me, re: Joss movies - I feel extremely "meh" about The Avengers, but was completely all over Cabin. (That said, it seems like horror is pretty much a love it or hate it genre for most people, and I totally don't blame those non-horror folks who don't want to see Cabin.)

I've found recently that I'd much rather watch a small group of shows that I'm really super into instead of casting a wide net. "Decent" isn't good enough for me anymore, if I'm not IN LOVE with a show I don't want to spend all that time watching it.

Yeah, I typically hate, hate, haaaaaate horror. And I might be with you on the "decent" thing. Plus, video games! :)

An LJ post! I'd almost forgotten about these! Anyway, yeah, I feel your pain. Only not about Cabin In The Woods, but The Hunger Games. Everyone and their grandmother's janitor has seen and loves it, raves about it endlessly and I just don't give a crap. I don't hate it, mind you. I just don't care. There's no law saying I have to or that you should, either. IMHO, there are only so many things any one person can be interested in and just because a certain thing is popular doesn't mean you automatically have to include it on your personal list.

Also, interests change over time - at least, I hope they do. I worry about people whose interests stay absolutely static over years and years, even decades. That says to me they're not growing and evolving and learning. So don't feel the need to apologize or explain why you're into new things. Of course you are. It means you're not intellectually dead.

IKR? I dunno where else to put this kind of randomy, non-topical personal nonsense that doesn't have a character limit other than here. ;) I agree with you about Hunger Games as well, couldn't give two craps.

But yeah, I can feel my tastes shifting away from TV shows and totally toward games, which I am fiiiiiine with. I think I just needed to write it out is all. :)
