Everyone Draw Muhammad Day - Oh Hell No

May 20, 2010 07:30

I almost blew off drawing anything for "Everyone Draw Muhammad Day" because of lack of free time, but then xianjaguar and shadowfox24 posted out in their journals that Furaffinity posted the following on their front page:

"Draw Muhammad Day: 5/20/2010 has been designated 'Draw Muhammad Day' by the Internet. While we do permit artistic freedom, please keep in mind that derogatory, sexual and/or outright insulting Muhammads will not be permitted. Keep them clean, respectful. Derogatory Muhammads will be removed."

Alone this may not seem like much, other then FA bending to political correctness. However in reality there is rank hypocrisy in this statement, because most people know that the site has no issues allowing for derogatory if not down right XXX hard-core pornographic images of other major religious figures and icons (Jesus and the Pope are two frequent targets). So suddenly FA cares about how religious figures are portrayed? Bullocks. It is simply being cowardly in the face of potential Islamic outrage and political correctness.

*Update* It appears FA is making an effort to remove all the pics down mocking any religious figures. That would be a positive move on their part if applied fairly. Just have to wait and see how that goes down and what is deemed "unacceptable".

Now I am not normally the one to complain about offensive satirical art of religious figures, it is free artistic expression after all. I personally don't do it out of respect for friends and loved ones who may revere religious icon x, but this is where I draw the line. Asking that people be respectful or at least tolerate of one's faith and the holy figures is just common decency. I am 100% willing to do that out of respect and friendship for that very reason. However, demanding it under the threat of bodily harm, murder, and mayhem, well then all bets are off.

So I quickly slapped together this image this morning:

So why a woman on a winged horse? Well legend says Mohammad flew to Jerusalem to visit the temple that was built by King Solomon on such a horse, and how do we know Mohammad wasn't a woman? We have no contemporary images after all. Oh I know, the many wives thing, but Mohammad could have been a lesbian. Honestly though I think he was a man, but after 14 centuries in paradise, he got bored and had a sex change.
