While commuting in to $Employer this morning, I heard an advertisement on the radio for cremation services, using environmentalism as the sales pitch. The "green solution" it was referred to, cheaper, more environmentally friendly, quicker to return to the Earth ( Read more... )

Myself, I don't care if I get "Sent to glory in a Glad Bag"; I'll be dead and past caring about such temporal concerns!

That said, I agree about avoiding those big and expensive funerals. It seems rather pointless to me anyway, and that's avoiding drek like the local funeral parlor's attempt to sell my family a casket with a warranty (or something like that; maybe they just promised us a casket that would "ensure that your loved one remains as they are now forever, for just a few thousand more." Not cool to do that when you're burying your own mother).

I guess I'll buck the trend by saying I'll opt for a traditional burial. As to cost, this is one of the things that life insurance can insulate against and why I think it's only right to carry a minimal amount if just to cover that. Or optimally arranging for and covering the costs of things like preparation, a box, a rock and a hole yourself ahead of time.

I think the Soylent Green solution is a few years off.
I really don't like either method of disposing of my carcass. I don't really know if we're supposed to keep our bodies intact for the resurrection to work. On the other hand, coffins are enclosed in this big metal thing, pretty well ensuring that I have no possible means of escape if I were ever put in one by mistake. There would be no Kill Bill solution to this. Those things are solid aluminum. I'd pretty much just have to accept suffocating to death.
