It does seem silly. Marriage, although very, very important, is simply a form of contract (at a secular level, anyway). The law recognizes contracts that continue indefinitely, so long as there are continuing obligations in the service of the contract performed from time to time on both sides.

Well hey, if the right wing argument against gays marrying is that "Only procreating males and females should marry", then requiring all married couples prove that they are procreating every couple of years is the logical next step in such a prohibition. After all, we wouldn't want those rotten infertile couples and dregs-on-society elderly couples to have the same legal rights as the Octamom and her man. :)

On that matter, why do they issue these things in the first place? I say to hell with it! Marry in private, don't drag government into it!
