I wondered that myself, why rabbits for America? Could be that rabbits are common and widespread in the world and thus could represent America's melting pot of ethnic groups as we are the most diverse nation on the planet.

I am just as curious why monkeys and gorillas for Japan?!

Britain and France can't be too happy with their picks. ;P

Hmm, interesting - or perhaps coincidence? The Japanese are really big on symbolism. I'm still not convinced it isn't something more symbolic than just simple word play.
