If you order a book from amazon and it has a 4-6 week availability prediction, but in the event they cannot obtain it and cancel your order why does it still get shown on the website with a 4-6 week availability?
If it says that it means that Amazon don't have stock themselves, so they contact the publisher to ask for more copies.
The publisher then might just ignore them for a while, and eventually they give up and tell you they can't get it - but unless they're told it's out of print, it'll still be listed in their database, and maybe next time the publisher will actually fulfil the request they send out...
