I don't think your alone in feeling this way.
It is not my reason but I just think once they get too popular they seem
to change their style to suit a broader audience and they lose that special thing that drew you to them in the first place.

I do not think I could've put it any better than that. A great example of this is an Australian band called the Whitlams. I saw them in their early days, and have most of their early albums, many that I love. At one point they had a big hit album, which, granted, was a very good album also, but as is often the case, it was far more polished, less raw, and less "Whitlams" for me. It seems like most of what has come out since is far less grabbing, far more poppy, and far less memorable.

Enough said.

I agree totally about the Whitlams. Even Powder Finger's early albums were really quality and look what being mainstream did to them.
