SETH MACFARLANE IS GOING TO REBOOT THE FLINTSTONES! I wish I was kidding. O_o

NO! Just...NO!!!!

I have nothing against MacFarlane (heck, I love American Dad). But the idea of the man behind Family Guy helming the reboot of a wholesome, iconic CHILDREN'S CARTOON worries me. I grew up with The Flintstones. I ate their cereal and their vitamins. And I ( Read more... )

Good grief, that doesn't sit well with me either. It's the Flintsones, they're as iconic as say...well, Scooby-doo.

On the other hand, we have only seen him do adult cartoons so it's possible this reboot will show he can do more family friendly shows too along with the extreme ones.

I'll probably save final judgment until I see the show, but it does seem like an odd choice.

Keep in mind he did like Johnny Bravo and stuff too, so it may not be what you're thinking of.

He did get his start doing family-friendly cartoons (and, yeah, he was good at it). And I'm sure he could make a good, non-crude reboot...if he wanted to.
Problem is, the guy is making so much money for Fox that they'll probably let him do whatever he wants with this reboot. He'll likely have very little restrictions where content is concerned and THAT'S what worries me.

But he's been wanting to reboot it since before Family Guy. So it may very well be family-friendly. I have no idea. I'll be able to make judgments when more info is released.

I'll check it out when it premiers (and I'll humbly eat my words if MacFarlane manages to pull it off). But his current track record has me worried.

On a lighter note, I wonder who would be cast for it. Would they use the actors from the cereal commercials (whoever they are), or would they opt for more famous names? I doubt MacFarlane will volunteer to do any lead roles since he currently has his plate full with American Dad and Family Guy.

And I'm sitting here wondering why The Flintstones need a reboot?

I saw this, and I pretty much nearly cried.

The Flintstones was originally for adults though. It was a bit of a spoof on the Honeymooners, only set in prehistoric times. Seriously, you can go dig out commercial spots the characters did for things like cigarettes.

Regardless, I wish they'd let classics be, and come up with new shows.

I don't think cigarette ads are proof that a show was "for adults". Back then, smoking was not a big deal and wasn't treated like THE ULTIMATE EVIL!1! the way it is today.

Back then, even "adult" shows had different standards. So adding crudeness for the sake of appealing to today's adults would betray the spirit of the show even though that was always the target audience.

I'm a Broadcasting major, I had to learn all about this stuff. (And I'm a nerd.) ichiban_victory May 19 2011, 03:40:46 UTC
It was an adult show, aired in the evening time and everything, but standards were very different back when it first came out. (Check out shows like The Dick Van Dyke Show, where a married couple can't even be hinted at sharing the same bed, I Love Lucy never talking about or showing Lucy as pregnant, etc., for more information on how different things were at the time.) What passes as adult entertainment now is a far cry from back when the Flintstones first came out.

Really, the Simpsons is a pretty good modern version of what the Flintstones was to adults back in the day (back when the Simpsons was good), but I'd not want the Flintstones to EVER become so modern that they insert crudeness and low humor in general in order to gather an audience. I avoid all current "adult cartoons" with a passion, for good reason. XP
