Do you think that modern pop music is atonal, amoral garbage?

I have a teenage sister who listens to 'Party in the USA', the new Brittany Spears song, and Lady Gaga 24/7. And, is it just me, or do all modern pop songs sound exactly the same? They're all so electronically muffled that you can't understand most of the lyrics (and the ones you can understand are really gross >_<). My sister thinks I'm just an ( Read more... )

Those kids and their fancy-pants music. I motion we sit on that bench in front of your house and tell those whippersnappers to get off our lawn.

I just find it all rather boring. I can't really comment about the morals part since every generation's guilty in that department (really, the difference is just that newer generations are more blatant).

You have a point about the morals thing. But at least the older bands had to exercise some creativity if they wanted to write a dirty song. Modern songwriters need to relearn the fine art of the double entendre.

I had some sort of context about this but... nah, I just need an excuse to post the Cookie Monster parody of Shaft.

I'm with you on this one. I don't like modern stuff myself. I stick to movie scores, 60's & 70's and classical mostly with the occasional eclectic song that gets stuck in my head.

I've noticed a trend over the years that the newer the music, the harder it is to make out just what the heck the singer is saying. I've not made it a point to keep up to date on music since...never, I still remember back when I was a kid and I thought 'Deaf Leopard' was just that - a deaf leopard. Granted, every now and again a good song comes along, but for the most part I just leave them alone.

That second video made me sad though, if Britney Spears is referring to Peter, Paul and Mary. I too grew up listening to them and I still love their music. With music like theirs you could at least understand what was being said!

Man, and music is getting really raunchy anymore..

I was also never big on keeping up with music trends. I only know the popular songs today because my sister and her friends listen to them constantly.
I remember following hip-hop back when artists like Will Smith and TLC were all the rage. Looking back, I really admire Smith for keeping his songs clean and TLC for having such empowering lyrics. Especially now that almost all popular hip-hop is full of garbled lyrics about degrading women. It makes it hard to believe that a goofy song like 'Baby Got Back' was really controversial not too long ago.

The Peter, Paul, and Mary thing made me sad, too (and I don't blame the dude for ranting about it). I just hope that "Peter, Paul, and Mary" doesn't become a slang term for icky threesomes among the young folks. >_Raunchy music gets on my nerves, too. My dormmates/co-workers back in Denver gave me such a hard time when I complained about the gross music they listened to in the Government van we were FORCED to share ( ... )

UGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH..... YES, I do believe modern pop music is garbage... not all of it is, but it USUALLY is. So many songs are so.... superficial and MEANINGLESS, hence why I have a tendency to listen to more foreign music. I take offense to your sister's "old fuddy duddy" comment because it's like saying that songs with meaning are "in the past", I don't want a future where everything is shallow! DX. Not to mention, I'm a teenager too! I'm still in high school and frankly I don't want to be lumped in with a majority of the other teenage girls. Sure, I know alot of nice people and nice girls, but what is deemed the "typical" high school female annoys me XP.

granted, I dance to some of the songs you mentioned, but only because my dance teacher plays them during our lessons and because like it or not, I find the songs to be catchy and easy to dance to >.>. I don't listen to them on my own time though.

I also hate how so many songs these days are littered with swear words and raunchy references....... DX. And I hate how so many of them are kinda.... whiny.....

I usually listen to more ballads and rock ballads, or inspirational stuff, or contemporary.... I also love a good deal of older songs, partly cuz' my mom would play them in the car when I was little.

Its good to know at least one teenager with a good head on her shoulders. Honestly, I don't begrudge people who happen to enjoy this kind of music (different strokes and all that). I just don't like it when people give me a hard time for objecting to it.

My 8 months living in a dorm setting was really upsetting because I got tagged as a "religious nut" simply because I don't drink alcohol and I objected to "kill the niggers" songs being played in the government car we used for work.
