I think this is one of the reasons that Faramir's characterization in the movie bothered me so much (I mean, aside and apart from the fact that it was completely, you know, the opposite of his characterization in the book!)... :o/
After multiple viewings it got easier for me to accept Faramir, but you're right he wasn't 'book Faramir.' Same goes for Denethor, whose characterization of 'crazy overlord with no redeeming qualities' irked me even more.
