I often think I was born on the wrong continent. I've never made it over to the UK, but I frequently find myself doing things like using British spellings for words like theatre and colour. And, if I were over there, taking milk and sugar in my tea would NOT get my funny looks from people.
Also, I enjoy calling people pillocks and threatening to kick people's arses.
My favorite place to be (that I have actually been) is also in Canada. I am absolutely in love with the Niagara region. I LOVE the falls (hate the tourists). It's absolutely euphoric to me. I also love Niagara on the Lake with all the shops, B&B's, and theatres. I haven't been there in a while, which makes me very sad. I used to go up there several times a year.
So with you on spelling words 'the British way' and using British words and phrases. The other day I was talking to my mom on the phone and mentioned 'getting into a row' with someone. I didn't even realise I said it until she interjected, "You've been watching a lot of British stuff lately, haven't you?"
That whole area of southern Ontario I just love... Niagara, London, Stratford, Kitchner/Waterloo. It really is a beautiful, homey area of land for me.

I spent most of my school years in NW Ohio, 47 miles from Detroit. Even our crummy antennas could bring in ch 9 CKLW from Windsor, I believe that station is where I first saw Mister Rogers. We always drove up to Windsor for July 1, then did the rinse-and-repeat on the 4th at home

I haven't been to Ottawa, but it sounds absolutely lovely! I didn't grow up quite as close to Canada, but still took many road trips there -- it was only three hours to Sarnia. People who've never been to the falls seem to not understand how much better the Canadian side is... I liken it to the road conditions. When driving in Ontario the road is always smooth, signs are clearly marked, and the air feels clearer as soon as you get beyond the large cities. Then you get back to the states (or Michigan at least) and you know instantly because the air smells weird and you worry about your tires and shocks. Makes me wish living in a state adjacent to Ontario gave you some kind of honorary citizenship...
That's a great story about your father. While I hope to make it to the UK to live one day, if perchance I don't, I want something like that done to remember me.
