Chapter Nine - Beautiful morning sunlight
She opens the door and hears nothing. It stays quiet as it has been outside. She feels that something is wrong, they haven’t gone out to eat or something like this. She becomes nervous and throws her keys and her bag beside. There isn’t the usual mess that the kids always make. There’s nothing!
“Tom?” She screams and walks a few steps forward. “I’m back, are you here?” She asks and goes further. “Porter, Preston? C’mon”, she screams again and waits for an answer. But there won’t be one. She walks into the kitchen and gets more and more nervous. There’s no one!
“Tom?” she screams again and walks faster to the bathroom. Nothing! The living room is completely empty, even as their bedroom! She runs and opens the kids rooms , screaming again and again for them. When she opens the doors she feels tears coming up and her breath gets more faster. Truly nothing! No clothes, no toys, no pictures, the whole rooms are empty! She begins to cry and runs back to check out the other rooms as if she’d missed something the first time.
“What the hell is going on here?”, she whispers and goes back into her bedroom. It’s empty, too. Penny’s little bed is empty! No coverlet or a binky, everything is left! There’s nothing in the bathroom, nothing in the whole apartment! She runs back to the kitchen, sadly crying. She tries to calm down herself, but the moment she noticed the message left on the fridge, she feels her heart split into thousands of pieces. She takes the message with her shivering hand, her face wet from all the tears. The only thing that was written on the paper is:
”Goodbye. Tom.”
She reads it again in disbelieve. She shakes her head. “No, no, no…” she whispers. She screams out loud in despite and disappointing. Hurt deep inside. She goes down to the floor and feels unable to move or to think. Her whole body is shaking under her sobs. She stares in the air, tears falling down her cheeks and she whispers all the time.
“No, you can’t! No, no, no…” She feels so weak and destroyed. “Why did you do this?” she screams loud and stands up. Uncontrollable weeping. “I want to know why!” she screams and throws the plates, standing in front of her, to the ground. She isn’t really knowing what she’s doing now. Her whole life has lost his balance within seconds. She reaches out for her mobile phone and dials his number with shaking hands.
”Tom? C’mon. I want you to pick up. DAMN!” but this number wasn’t available anymore. She lets her hand sink to the ground and drops the phone. “Breath calm”, she tells herself. She feels dizzy and sick. She couldn’t become unconsciousness no. There’s no one who could help her. No one who would miss her here. She tries to make her way in to the bathroom carefully. “Keep your eyes open!” she repeats in her mind. “Keep them open.”
Just the moment, she reaches the bathroom, she feels that she’s to throw up and goes to the ground after that and everything fades to black…
When she opens her eyes, she feels a shiver running trough her body. She still feels sick and cold and realizes herself laying on a hard cold ground. She tries hardly to stand up. Her legs are trembling. She managed to get to the sofa and sits down. Tears coming up again and the house seems so huge and scares her more than it already has since they’d moved in. Sitting there, alone in the cold darkness, her eyes swollen and tearful. She looks around the silent room and suddenly she feels really tired.
“I’ve to do something. I can’t sleep. I can’t!” She wants to stand up, but she’s to exhausted. “I’ve to call someone.” She thinks looking at her mobile phone laying on the ground at the other side of the room. It seems so far away. She leans back, her arms around her knees and lost the fight against fatigue.
Later that night she wakes up and thinks she’d heard Penny crying. As if nothing had happened she stands up to have a look after her. She feels numb. Lynette enters the room and she must realize that her bed is still blank. No crying Penny. Even her baby has gone.
“What have you done to them?” she asks as would her husband stand beside her and bursts out in tears another time that night. Her heart hurts so bad and slowly she walks out of the room. Reaching out for her mobile phone she crawls to the ground, still crying heavy she dials her best friends number.
“Don’t leave me alone, please pick up,” she whispers with a crying voice. The seconds she waits there seemed to be an eternity and she prays all the time that her call will be answered soon. She won’t drop till she’ll hear Bree’s voice.
“Why don’t you hear me? Please, you must be there. Let her hear the call.” She prays and waits and then she hears her answering in a tired and surprised voice.
”Van de Kamp?” she says.
Actually she wants to answer immediately, scared that she’ll drop the connection if no one answers, but suddenly she starts crying, too glad to her voice.
“Hello?”, Bree asks, pretty sure that there’s someone. She tries to say something again, while she cries.
“Bree,” she answers quiet and waits.
She doesn’t need to ask. She knows the person on the other side.
“Lynette? Lynette are you there?”, she asks feeling a bit uncomfortable.
Instead of giving her an answer she sobs heavily.
“Lynette, what has happened?”
It seems that she’s found her voice back. She must speak now. She’s the only one who could help her now.
“He’s gone”, she just answers. Bree tries hard to understand her.
“What do you mean, “he’s gone”? Where are they kids? Are they with you?”
“No…” she simply answers. “He’s taken them away from me.”
Even if Lynette hasn’t explained it in detail she knows what must’ve happened.
“Honey, stay where you are, do you hear me? I’ll come”, Bree says.
“Thank you,” her best friend whispers and the connection is off. Without hesitating, Bree changes her clothes fast and doesn’t care about her look, she takes her mobile phone and the paper with her address and walks out of the house and drives fast to carry her best friend.
It scares her, that she doesn’t know what’ll really expect her. A complete empty house, a big mess? And what about Lynette? Her condition seems to be miserable and she’s enough reasons to be. It feels so cruel and she’s sad, too. And the more thoughts she wasted about Tom, the more furious she gets!
Now, she sits there. Alone in the empty darkness, that should’ve been her home, perhaps the beginning of a new life. In the end it’s the beginning of hell. Her whole life seems to be turned around. Her last hope is the fact that Bree is on her way. All the time she thought about what she’d done wrong, what reasons did she gave him to leave her with the kids? They could’ve talked about it as usual. She didn’t deserved that! She couldn’t move, sitting on the floor beside the sofa, her hands still closed around her mobile phone and silent tears running down her cheeks while she stares in the room. Thank god, she’s given her a key with her address. “For emergencies”, she’d said. At Wisteria Lane, she hadn’t needed one. It seems to be hours she spends there, the whole house is deadly quiet and suddenly she could hear quiet steps from far away and they become louder with every move. For one desperate moment she thought about Tom who would come to carry her, but it must be Bree. With the sound of a key opening the door she feels a bit more safe and leans back at the sofa, her eyes are closed and she tries to becalm herself.
”Lyn?” Bree screams and reaches her with fast steps. “Oh my god, honey!” Bree says and goes down on her knees to close her in the arms. She doesn’t move or speak now. She just lets Bree hold her and lays her head on her shoulder.
She cried for a while and Bree doesn’t asked any questions. If she wanted to tell her something she could do, but she won’t ask. It’s bad enough what she’d gone through the last hours that she doesn’t want to let that happen in her mind again. Some day, even if it’s tomorrow she’ll tell her when she thinks that she’s strong enough to do. And now it is Bree’s part to wait till this day comes.
“I think we should go now,” Bree whispers taking her cold hand. She just nodded and stands up. “What, I’ll carry this, “ she says throwing the mobile phone and her leys in her own bag, takes her jacket and lays an arm around her hips to carry her to the car. She seems to be weak.
For one second Bree looks back before she closes the door behind her. It doesn’t look like that someone would come back in the next time. She closes the door holding Lynette’s hand, leading her down to the car. On their way to Fairview, nobody says a word. Lynette leans at the window watching outside and while she drives, Bree tries hardly not to look at her. She feels ashamed and afraid without any particularly reasons. The darkness makes her way into the warm and enjoyable morning light that Bree’d loved so much at the past times, far away at the horizon. She must’ve fallen asleep an hour or two ago. And suddenly, she feels that she could. Her eyes are shut and she won’t see the pain and sadness in them, even as the incertitude and curiosity. It hurts her and she’d almost tried to hide these feelings. They’re scaring herself and seeing her best friend going through all this makes her feeling really helpless and sorry. “She looks so peaceful, “ she thinks. With closing her eyes she’d put this out and with the moment she’ll wake up, it’ll hit her and Bree hopes so much that she’ll be prepared then. Isn’t it her part, too? Preparing and protecting her for the coming? For the supporting and all those things? Yes it is. When the first shock is over, Lynette has to deal with the truth again. And it’ll come clearer to her mind then she wants it to be. Maybe she has to accept it, that’s the only way to have a chance to fight for her family or better said her children. The nearer they come to Fairview, the more tired she becomes. The whole street is still sleeping when she drives in. Now it has that beautiful warm and at the same time a bit cool morning light that she loves. She’d watched it so many times for her bedroom window when Rex was still sleeping. She thought about so much things sitting there, Asking herself questions of what she’d done wrong or right. At the moment, her life seems to be a complete mess. The life of the almost perfect Bree Van de Kamp is totally messed up. She doubt about her marriage in lonely moments, thought about how life has threatened her if she hasn’t married Rex such a long time ago. She’d always trusted in god and her prayers. But now it didn’t work. The rising sun was always a sign to start a new day. And you couldn’t know what would happen. You shouldn’t hope so much maybe you just should let it happen. Perhaps this is the day. The day of a new beginning. For Lynette. For her? No one could know. Looking at the horizon that the sun has put into a light orange and golden line. She feels stronger. Stronger to suggest the person who needs her.
“Lynette?” she says softly, caressing her arm. She opens her eyes and looks still tired. “Let’s go in.” She goes out of the car, Lynette behind her.
Inside the living room, she sits down at the sofa and still says nothing while Bree makes her way through the house to bring her some new clothes and a pillow. She wants to say something all the time, but there aren’t any words coming out. They seemed to disappear, before she could speak them out and her mind is so full. She makes tea while the blonde haired woman had started to wear the things…
It’s six in the morning and Lynette sits there, leaned at the soft pillows, staring in front of her. “It’ll be better to leave her alone now,” she thinks standing up again. “Or better not? Maybe she needs a bit time, “ and she couldn’t lost the feeling that she’s getting on her nerves! But that is nonsense… “She called you,” Bree repeats in her head. “And no one other.”
She thought that Lyn had fallen asleep again and before she could reach the stairs, she hears he quietly speaking.
“Don’t leave me alone, please!” she whispers and goes up. Now Bree can see it! For one second she thought her eyes are filled with tears. She can see the pain in her eyes. Without hesitating she goes back to the living room and sits down beside her. She doesn’t know how she should act, what would be wrong and what not? And then Lynette turns her head around, so that they’re in front of each other.
“I want you to look at me.” She whispers.
“I can’t…”.
“Don’t leave me alone, “ she repeats.
“I won’t…” Bree replies.
Lynette leans her head on her best friend’s shoulder and then Bree lays her arm around her to pull her closer.
“Thank you.”
She felt asleep a few minutes ago and suddenly Bree doesn’t feel tired. She could feel her body moving while she breathes quiet and looks at her sleeping.
The golden sunlight has reached the window and shines at her face. That makes her looking more peaceful… Her blonde hair shimmers in the light.
“You’re so beautiful”, she whispers and closes her eyes to keep that picture in her mind…
Six months were gone since Bree had taken Lynette at her home. It has been six month ago when she’d woken up beside her. She still could remember the feelings she’d felt then. Insecure, pain, disappointing and love…
Sitting at the front porch alone, watching the heavy rain that dropped at the street. No one is outside now. She could see a light burning in Lynette’s house at the other side of the Street. She’d moved back in almost three months ago. It was a hard decision but finally she told herself to get it! With her friends she’d changed everything in her house that could remember her at the past. The house is alive again and just the kid’s rooms are empty, the doors are closed. She’ll find her time, to open them… She’s visited often by her friends, and they’re doing a lot together. They tried her best for he to look at the future and the live she’s still living and they made her noticing that she has to go one. Doesn’t matter what will come! Bree won’t imagine the lonely nights she spends alone in the house, it makes her a bit sad. With the time, she’s found her smile back and learned to talk about what happened.
Up to know , they haven’t got a sign of where the kids could be, and it’s more difficult than it seems. Bree is proud of her best friend in some way. Soon, she’ll go back to work in her old firm. That’ll bring her to other thoughts. A thunder comes up and the rain becomes more. Bree could hear them dropping from the roof and a cold breeze touches her skin and she frowned a bit. The seasons have changed and the autumn brings his colours at Wisteria Lane. Nice colours and they’re preparing us for the dark and cold winter. The days will be shorter, colder and darker. She won’t spend her lonely afternoons outside at the porch. The winter is a change, not only for the nature as she’ll notice soon. Rex hasn’t come home from work. It would be late he told her this morning. Something has changed between the, too. Not, because of her Kiss! He doesn’t know about. There’s something in general, but she still loves him with her whole heart. She’d loved him all her life. But what’s with Lynette? The past time, she hasn’t had the time to think about her feelings for her. They’ve gone more and more to the background. Covered from the things that’ve happened and by her love for her husband. Sometimes she hates him and wishes that he’ll be away, but then, a part of her misses him.
Without caring about the rain she stands up and wants to visit Lynette and the moment she stands up, sickness overcomes her and she feels dizzy for a few seconds. She waits a short time and runs trough the rain and knocks at the door.
“Hey, you’re really wet from the rain. Come in”, she laughs and steps beside to let her in.
“Thank you,” she answers and feels the warmth of her house around herself. “Whatcha up to?” she asks and sits down on the Sofa.
“Oh, nothing. Just cleaning up a bit. Do you want something to drink something?” She asks sitting in front of her at the ground.
“No, thanks. I’d already tea at home.”
“You’re looking pale.”
”I always do, “ Bree says and gives her a short smile.
”No, serious!”
“Okay, I’m pale!“
„Bree!“ she says with a warning look. “ Are you getting ill?”
“No.”
“What happened?” she wants to know.
“I just felt a bit sick a few minutes ago. That’s all and it’s nothing new at such seasons…”
“Excuse.”
“Do you want me to be ill?” she asks raising her head from her hands.
“Of course not!”, she replies. “I’m just worried about you!”
“Oh, honey. That’s sweet. But there’s no need to be. You see, I’m fine.” She spreads her arms and looks at her with a smile. “I’m fine.”
“Okay, accepted!”, she agrees. They spend the time with talking and laughing and enjoyed it. Slowly, the things become normal again.
When she comes home she finds everything in the way she left it before she’s gone. No one was there, even Rex. Andrew and Danielle will be with friends, but what about her husband? He said, he’ll be late. But this is definitely too late! He hasn’t called her.
“Maybe, there’s a lot of stuff to do. Accidents happen everyday! There are always people who didn’t pay attention!” she says to herself. Candles are burning at the table and she walks through the house as if she’s looking for something. She closes a door here and opens one there. In her bedroom, she touches the coverlet with one hand walking by.
Walking through her house, she feels more and more uncomfortable. No one is there. Her kids are with friends, and her husband? That’s what scares her the most. She hasn’t heard something up to now and she still loves him and that se cares even of the things that have happened. Crossing the bathroom door once again, she sees herself in the mirror. Her hair isn’t the same as usual and her eyes are looking tired. She feels tired and she wants nothing more then sleeping, but she can’t. She’d taken one decision on her way downstairs. She’s to call him. Otherwise she never could sleep. She takes the phone and wants to dial his number.
She takes one last deep breath and suddenly it rings, she feels a cold shiver running down her back…
