Old news rant, but still.

I don't judge you if you disliked S6. There are a lot of perfectly good reasons to feel that way ( Read more... )

Ugh, yes, this. I've seen a couple of just such rants/diatribes on my flist since Friday night, and I just don't get it. :(

It is making me so full of rage. I think I may need some time away from fandom or something until this blows over.

while i agree with a large part of this (death threats are uncalled for though DIAF is Fandom's version of GTFO) specially anything resembling misogyny i do reserve the right to say "Fuck you, Sera Gamble" as a shortcut to express my dissatisfaction for her work. just like i would say "Fuck you, Kripke" if the buck stopped with him.

if that makes you rage, that's on your head. if that's not what you're talking about, good. just so that we can clear up any misunderstandings.

Heck, as long as you're not threatening violence or making bizarre commentary on her voice or her eyebrows I'm not gonna be pissed. And it's your right to say whatever you want, of course, I can't stop you.

But I still think it makes more sense to critique someone's work than to apply personal insults, if we can manage it. I don't believe at directing hate at people, but at their behaviour. And I also think the buck might not necessarily stop with Sera as much as we think; there are a lot of examples of showrunners who still needed approval from EPs, for example. So that's why this Kripke/Edlund worship in combination with all the Sera hate is pissing me off. They're a huge part of this, too, and Kripke wrote the episode that people are freaking out about but I haven't seen anyone criticize him personally, just the episode.

But if you would treat Kripke exactly the same, then that's fine. It's the double standard that makes me rage.

i understand that, because i too hate it when geek-boy adoration is accompanied by hate, disgust for the geek-girl and this fandom is as guilty as any for doing that (a few rotten apples) but it's like i've posted before ( ... )

Right. And I said there's nothing wrong with you say "fuck you" if you're not combining it with sexist crap or applying a double standard? I'm really not sure why we're still arguing here.

I've never said it's not OK to criticize Gamble. I've never said it's not OK to criticize Lisa either.

My problem is with a heck of a lot of people I'm seeing around right now behaving like assholes in a specific, very clearly sexist way. You're seeing less of it and that's cool, you have a rad flist. But there were some appalling comments on that TVLine article earlier that honestly made me want to throw up, and spn_party was pretty shitty too. It's not everyone, of course, but it's more than a few rotten apples right now too, and I reserve the right to tell them to fuck off. ;)

I couldn't agree more. People are so quick to praise Kripke when an episode is amazing/pat him on the back and say 'it's okay' when it wasn't their favorite. But they are ready to burn Gamble at the stake and eat her for dinner because one episode wasn't what THEY wanted (even though there are a hell of a lot of people who loved the finale).

It's just ridiculous, and makes the fandom look ridiculous.

(and hi, I hope you don't mind that I added you. You seem to be one of the few very sane, well spoken fans I have come across and I need that on my flist lol)

Yes, exactly. It's that double standard that's driving me crazy.

It's embarassing to be honest. I'm not even a huge Gamble fan - she's done a few episodes that have rubbed me the wrong way - but I just want to apologize on behalf of the entire fandom or something right now.

(Hi! Always pleased to make new friends.)

You would think that a fandom that is predominantly female would not pull the double standard thing, but I can't say it doesn't surprise me.

To be honest, I don't know who has directed which episodes because that's not something I have ever paid attention to. So, I'm just going to assume I have liked/disliked episodes the both of them have done. But I've never seen the need that others do to fly off the handle. It's completely unnecessary. So I, like you, feel like apologizing on behalf of the whole fandom and I'm still a fandom newbie.

I pay some attention to who writes which episodes - less attention to who directs - and for me it's exactly like that; Kripke and Gamble have each done ones I love, and ones I can't stand.

(You're a newbie and you got that screenname?!)

Fandom can be a dangerous, tiring place. After my experience with Smallville, I am trying to keep away from episode discussions precisely because of this sort of lunacy. I have been very disappointed with S7 and yes, TPTB are the ones responsible, but that's where the buck stops for me. I guess for some, they need to vent a whole lot more.
