Key woke up early that morning. Usually, Jonghyun would be the first to wake up but this time, Key was first. “I suppose I’m too excited to stay asleep,” Key thought as he climbed down from the top bunk bed. He came up close to Minho to make sure he was still asleep. After all, the surprise was for Minho. Key couldn’t risk him finding out earlier than expected, right?
Key bounded off to the bathroom to wash up, barely able to contain his excitement. By the time Key was done in the bathroom, Jonghyun had just gotten up and was rubbing sleep from his eyes.
“You’re already awake? What’s the occasion?” Jonghyun innocently asked.
Key simply smiled as he headed to the kitchen to fix breakfast. He had to act as normal as possible. None of the other members had a clue what he had in mind and he planned on keeping it that way. He chuckled to himself. His boyfriend would be so touched.
Jonghyun came into the kitchen just as Key finished preparing pancakes for SHINee’s breakfast. Upon seeing that the food was ready, he pounced on it, earning a gleeful laugh from Key. Shuffling feet could be heard coming towards the kitchen, indicating that their leader had woken up. Onew came up from behind Key and gave him a wet smack on his cheek. Key giggled at that sudden action.
At that exact moment, Minho appeared and saw that exchange between the leader and his boyfriend. He scowled and walked off. Key stiffened for a few seconds but by the time he recovered from the shock, a resounding slam indicated that Minho had left for his morning jog. “Aish, you made Minho angry but that’s okay. I’m sure tonight will cheer him up,” Key chided Onew and went off to the closet.
Jonghyun looked at Onew. “Do you know what that boy has planned?” Jonghyun asked. Onew shook his head in reply. Losing interest in the conversation, he went to take a serving of pancakes for himself and sat across Jonghyun. He didn’t even realize the exasperated boy staring disbelievingly at him. “Yeboseyo, this is Key we’re talking about! Armed with a plan! And a surprise! Don’t you think that’s dangerous?” Jonghyun squawked. Onew’s gaze went up to meet Jonghyun’s for a moment before he continued with his breakfast.
“I’m going to the store to get groceries. I’ll be back soon,” Key’s voice floated to them from the living room where he was wearing his shoes.
“Key, I might have some plans for tonight…” Jonghyun began only to be cut by Key.
“No! You can’t! I need your help,” Key exclaimed. He was unwilling to share his plans but he didn’t have a choice. “I need you to bring Minho out while I prepare my surprise for him. Then I’ll text you on where to meet once everything’s ready. Please?” Key asked, his facial features shaping into an aegyo.
Sighing softly, Jonghyun nodded his head in agreement. Upon that, Key clapped his hands in delight and happily skipped out of the apartment. Jonghyun simply stared at the closed door in horror. “What have I gotten myself into?”
At the supermarket, Key was animatedly picking out groceries when he got a text from Jonghyun. It read, “Something’s wrong. Minho came back and left again. He brushed me off when I asked to hang out. So what’s the plan now?” A soft gasp escaped Key in shock. He did not expect such a strong reaction from Minho. He paused, thinking for a moment. “I know!” Key said to himself and proceeded to reply Jonghyun. Upon sending, he quickly finished his shopping and headed home, excitement running in his veins.
That evening, Minho headed towards the park situated a few blocks away from their apartment as agreed. He stopped near an empty bench and scanned the area, looking out for Key. His height gave him an advantage yet there was no sign of that diva. Minho wondered if Key planned to tell him the truth tonight. After all, he did catch his cheating lover red-handed that morning.
Just then, he noticed a figure walking towards his direction from a distance. However, it did not look like his boyfriend. On closer scrutinizing, he realized it was Onew. “Yah, what are you doing here? Where’s Key? Is he too afraid to ask me himself for a break-up that he sent his new boyfriend over?” Minho’s words were soft but spiteful.
Onew calmly shook his head. “I was the one who texted you. Key doesn’t know I used his phone. If I texted, you wouldn’t have come. I just want you to know, Key has been faithful to you.” Minho was going to rebut but Onew held up his hand. “Let me finish. I know you think that Key has been cheating on you, what with all that flirting he does but he’s just being friendly. He only has eyes for you. You’ll understand after tonight. I told Key I will make sure you will come. So come. Come on.”
Feeling a little doubtful, Minho walked alongside Onew in silence. There was an array of feelings swirling in him; confusion, jealousy, suspicion, anger. He really didn’t know what to believe but Minho trusted Onew. Unlike Key, Onew is always truthful so Minho went along with whatever Onew had in mind.
Soon enough, they reached an open meadow where picnickers usually sit to enjoy themselves but it was night time and all of them had left except for one. Onew headed straight for it. Seeing Jonghyun and Key on the picnic mat together joking around, Minho froze. As he was staring, something Jonghyun said caused the other to laugh out loud, tilting his head back and consequently, notice Minho standing in front of him. His laughter abruptly died but his lips slowly shaped into a soft smile. Onew noticed Minho falling back and walked back to pull on Minho’s arm, causing Minho to stumble slightly.
“Let’s go, Jonghyun. Give them some privacy,” Minho heard Onew say to Jonghyun before the latter whispered something into Key’s ear and got up. Onew said softly, “Have a good talk. Settle everything properly.” Both Jonghyun and Onew gave a slight smile to Minho and walked off together.
Key was laughing at his best friend’s lame joke when he saw Minho watching him with that fiery gaze. Thoughts were running through Key’s mind at a hundred miles per hour, “Shoot. He had to see me with Jonghyun as well. He’ll never forgive me now. Hey! I can’t think that way. Almighty Key always gets what he wants and Minho won’t even know he lost. All’s fair in love and war, right?” Key smiled at his boyfriend to distract him from noticing he was uncomfortable with that stare; it always scared him.
Jonghyun leaned in and whispered a soft “All the best,” before standing up and walking off with Onew.
Key and Minho silently eyeballed each other, neither wanting to speak first. Key was the first to break the awkward silence. “I made the food myself. Come and try it,” he said and gestured for Minho to sit. Hesitating a little, he sat opposite of Key, the food in between them acting as a barrier. “Why are you sitting so far away?” Key’s voice was soft. He sounded hurt. Feeling a little sorry, Minho moved to sit by Key which made him smile through the tears brimming in his eyes.
“Hey, why are you crying?” Minho asked. Key shook his head, trying to avoid his boyfriend’s gaze. He was discreetly blinking and wiping his tears away but Minho, being the observant person he was, caught the minuscule actions. He shifted closer to Key, giving the smaller boy a warm hug.
“Yah, I’m fine.” Key said, pushing Minho away slightly. He was still hurt but made a nonchalant face. To distract his lover, he picked up an egg roll and moved it to his lover’s mouth. “Eat,” he said, an obviously fake smile plastered on his face. Minho complied, enjoying the delicious food.
Unlike what Onew wanted, they did not touch on their tense relationship. The conversations ranged from their schedule to the food and other unimportant issues, the weather included. After eating, they laid down to enjoy the stars. “It would have been the most romantic night if we weren’t so awkward. Should I apologise? But I don’t even believe Onew’s explanation. How can Onew, of all people, know why he’s being so cold to me?” So many feelings coursed through Key’s mind that he almost missed Minho’s words.
“I’m sleepy. Let’s go home.” Minho moved to get up but Key reached over to touch his shoulder.
“Can we stay a while more? Please.” Key pouted. Minho nodded, laying back down and closed his eyes, a relaxed look on his face. A peaceful moment later, Key looked over, thinking that his boyfriend had dozed off.
“I don’t know why I can’t seem to explain myself to you when you’re awake.”
When Key came back from the supermarket, Jonghyun was in a fluster. His best friend usually got mad when anything doesn’t go his way. Jjong had apologised but Key waved it away, saying that it wasn’t his fault. He was angry at Minho for upsetting his plans. He simply wanted to spend his first anniversary with the tall boy by themselves. Was that too much to ask?
Deciding that he would make it happen no matter what, he started giving everyone a role. Onew was to get a hold of Minho and make sure he came for his surprise. Jonghyun, being the only other fashion-conscious person in the group, would help him with decorating the food. Taemin wanted to help with the cooking even though he had a huge amount of homework. Even after Key threatened the youngest, Taemin insisted; his aegyo was unsurpassed resulting in Key giving in to him.
After Onew made the call - he said he did - he came up to Key and pulled him aside. He explained that Key should learn to stop flirting with everyone. Key demanded to know what Onew meant by that. Onew said that the only reason Minho was angry was because Key had been seen hugging and joking around with a huge number of people for the past month and it was taking a toll on Minho’s trust.
Now, Key was holding back his sobs, “Minho, please don’t hate me. I’m sorry. Don’t treat me this way. I really didn’t mean to flirt. Please. I really do love you. You’re hurting me with this cold shoulder treatment you’re giving me.” His tears flowed freely down his cheeks as he reached out to caress his sleeping boyfriend’s face. Or so he thought was sleeping. A hand grasped his tightly, causing a gasp to escape his lips, “You’re not asleep?!?”
“No,” the Minho smirk was on in an instant.
“You heard all of it?” At the other’s nod, Key hid his face in embarrassment which made Minho laugh at him. “Yah, don’t laugh at me.”
“Come here.” Key moved towards Minho. Halfway, the latter grabbed hold of his moving boyfriend and dragged him into his arms. “I love you, you pabo. Don’t make me jealous again.”
Key smiled, whispering an “I love you too,” into his lover’s chest before he realised, “Pabo!?! How dare you…?” He was silenced with Minho’s lips on his. Key relaxed into the kiss with Minho’s arms around him and his lover’s hands rubbing his back. Soon, Key could feel the hands slipping into his shirt. “Hey. Not here. Let’s go home,” he smiled to Minho. They packed up their picnic items and walked off, hand in hand.
When they opened the door to their apartment, Onew spoke up, “That was long.” The lovers merely smiled. Key immediately took the picnic items to the kitchen. Out of curiosity, Onew asked Minho, “What happened? Have you guys made up?”
With a wide smile, he answered the leader with an eager nod and called out to Key, “I’ll be waiting in the bathroom.” The look on Onew’s face was priceless; his face was so red.
When Key went into the bathroom, it was already steamy and there was a bubble bath ready. He came up to Minho, “Happy anniversary, baby.” Key kissed him and as they all say, the rest is history.
