For anyone who writes original characters

For God's sake, people need to learn how to name their characters. It's not like naming children, where your only considerations are, "Do I like this name?" and "Will this name get my child beaten up on the playground/cause lots of confusion?". (And sometimes not even the latter.) You don't get to pick whatever you want and leave it at that ( Read more... )

Ooh, I love naming my characters. I think the research is really fun! Names all have histories, and it can be really fun to know so much about what your character is being called, even if it never actually makes it into the story. Plus, if you want to get really intense about it, old census forms are so much fun to look at. My mom reads them endlessly for her genealogy projects, and they can be awesome.
