Jane Austens books were timely when written and published and not now. If he didn't also update the setting that may have an effect on their rejection. Also other people may have felt they were repeats / cliches even if they didn't bother to personally till him not to copy her.

So while that sort of stunt sounds cute and makes him feel a little less bad at being rejected, it doesn't really demonstrate anything. Though it's certainly true that it's hard to get fiction published with out an agent and can be difficult to get an agent if you aren't already published.
