A.N:
Heather made me do it.
Rachel struggled up the four flights of stairs lugging the last of her boxes. Gripping tight onto the corners she took the last step up into the corridor and made her way down to her new apartment. She had finally found the perfect place after months of searching. Her boyfriend Jesse had insisted it wasn’t good enough and that she should keep looking, though Rachel had a feeling he was trying to get her to move in with him. After all, he had been the one to deny most of the previous apartments she had found. “The kitchen is too small” he would say, or “The place has a dodgy history.” or “The landlord was seedy looking.” He probably figured she would run out of places eventually and finally take him up on his offer. This apartment was no different, as he came up with many reasons for her not to choose it, but she just had a feeling about the place. She knew it was the one.
Just as Rachel slid her key into the keyhole on the door marked 4A, juggling the last box as she did, she heard a voice calling out.
“Here. Let me help you with that.”
Smooth skin brushed her own and the weight of the box was lifted from her hands, and Rachel could swear she felt a spark. She turned her head to see long flowing blonde hair framing an angelic face. There was no doubt the girl was beautiful, her hazel eyes piercing into brown. Rachel shook her head, snapping out of the trance she was in. Finally opening the door, she turned and stuttered out thanks to the other girl.
“So you’re the new resident then?” The blonde asked as she placed the box down on top of the pile that was sitting just inside the doorway.
“No, I just like lugging boxes up stairs” Rachel replied sarcastically. She would have apologised, but the smirk on the other girl’s face told her she hadn’t take offence.
“I’m Quinn. And you’re funny.” She said with a smile.
“Most people call me Rachel.”The brunette replied, offering her hand out to the other girl, who shook it gently.
“Nice to meet you. I live over there” she gestured to the door directly opposite Rachel’s. “Do you want any help unpacking? I mean, I’m not offering because I’m way too lazy for that, but I’m sure I could convince my roommate to help you out.”
Rachel smiled at the other girl and shook her head. “It’s okay. I wouldn’t want you to strain yourself.” Quinn laughed at her and Rachel found herself fixated on the blonde’s smile. “I have help coming tomorrow anyway, so...” she trailed off.
“Right. Well if you need anything, just knock.”
“Sure.” Rachel said, nodding her head as she watched the blonde retreat back to her own door.
“See you later!” She called out, watching as Quinn offered a wave through the gap in the closing door. She walked back into her apartment, closing the door with a smile. She definitely picked the right place.

Quinn slumped against the now closed door with a smile on her face. She had just met Rachel and was already convinced she was the girl of her dreams. The moment she laid eyes on her she just knew she needed her.
“Quinn? Is that you babe?” She heard a familiar voice call out. She walked into the lounge room to see her roommate lounging on the couch watching TV. She dropped down, sprawling herself out on top of the other girl, the smile still evident on her face.
“What the hell is up with you?”
Quinn reached her hand up to run it through thick brunette hair. “Hey San!” she whispered, and watched as dark brown eyes rolled hard enough to detach and keep rolling all the way down main street.
“No seriously. Whats up?” Santana asked, flicking on the television.
“I met the new girl.” Quinn drawled out.
“And...”
“And she’s beautiful. And funny.” Quinn closed her eyes and rolled over, burring her face into Santana’s neck. “And I’m pretty sure she was checking me out.”
“And you’re in love with her already?” The Latina finished in a questioning tone.
“Most definitely.” Quinn replied. Santana sighed and wrapped and arm around the girl, turning the TV back on. She watched as the other girl continued to smile.
“What am I going to do with you now?”
“Who knows. Oh! I told her you’d help her unpack all her shit.”
Quinn hit the floor with a loud thud. “So unnecessary.” She mumbled.

It was two days later when Rachel and Quinn next saw each other. Quinn heard music wandering through her walls, accompanied by a sweet yet strong voice that definitely did not belong to the original composer of the songs. She peaked out her door to see Rachel’s wide open, the girl occasionally passing with a broom in hand, bopping her head along to the music. Quinn smiled and lent against her door frame, watching the brunette dance around her apartment. She giggled lightly, and Rachel must have super human hearing, she thought, because she quickly spun around, eyes wide and mouth hanging open.
“Oh my god!” she exclaimed, dropping the broom and burrowing her face in her hands. “How long have you been standing there?!” she shrieked.Quinn laughed at the other girl’s obvious embarrassment. The tiny brunette was just too cute for words.
“Not that long. Although, from what I saw, you were putting on quite a good show.”
“This is so embarrassing.” Rachel let out, rushing to turn the music down.
“Don’t be embarrassed. Really. It was cute.” Quinn said, watching as a blush spread across the other girl’s face.
“I was cleaning. I have a habit of broom-dancing, which has been suppressed by the invention of the vacuum.”
“Ah, yes. The vacuum. I was going to ask if you knew that existed.” Quinn teased with a smirk. “I don’t think I’ve used a broom since...ever.” Rachel laughed lightly at the blonde.
“Yes I know it exists! Mine is still in storage.” she said, defending herself with a laugh. “I would have waited to clean until I got it out this weekend, but I couldn’t wait. This place was covered in dust.”
Quinn stared at Rachel for a few seconds before standing back upright. “Wait here.” she said, disappearing back into her apartment. Rachel watched on curiously as the door closed shut.
Quinn ran through her apartment to the small storage cupboard in the hallway that housed their cleaning supplies. She quickly grabbed her vacuum out, lugging it back down the hallway at a considerably lower pace.
“What the hell are you doing, Fabray?” came Santana’s voice as she passed the dark haired girls bedroom. “I already vacuumed this morning!” Quinn stopped, caught like a deer in headlights, and stared innocently at her friend. The girl was staring with her eyes narrowed at her, a book resting in her lap.
“I’m letting Rachel borrow it.” she said quickly, attempting to start back down the hall, but was again stopped by Santana.
“And who is Rachel, might I ask?”
“She’s the girl across the hall.”
“Oh.” Santana replied, her voice full of realisation.
“Can I go now?” Quinn asked, rolling her eyes. Santana flicked her hand in a gesture of dismissal, a smirk spreading across her face.
“Carry on!” She said returning to her book.
Quinn briefly wondered if she should be concerned about what was running through the girl’s mind, but remembered she had just left Rachel standing in the hallway with no explanation. She turned and lugged the vacuum back out into the hallway where Rachel was still standing, waiting the girl’s return. Upon Quinn’s arrival, Rachel’s draw dropped.
“Here,” Quinn said, “you can borrow mine.”
“It’s fine really, you don’t have to.” Rachel refused modestly.
“Take it. I don’t mind.” Quinn walked across the hall, placing the heavy machine down inside Rachel’s doorway.
“What if I break it?”
“You’re not going to break it.”
“But I might. You barely know me. I could be terribly clumsy and break everything in my path.” Quinn raised an eyebrow and looked pointedly into the girl’s apartment, where all her belongings in eyesight sat in pristine condition.
“Look. I really don’t mind. I’m just trying to do a good deed, be a friendly neighbour, whatever. Take it, use it, clean the hell out of the place.” Rachel smiled at the other girl. “From our two encounters I’ve come to the conclusion that you are a fairly sane person. I don’t think you’re going to run off with my vacuum cleaner. I mean, it’s like twice the size of you...”
“Hey! What is this!” Rachel laughed “We’ve known each other for like two days and you’re already making short jokes?” Both girl’s grinned at each other before Rachel spoke again. “Thanks for letting me borrow it though. I promise to return it in one piece.” She joked.

Just like after the first time Quinn had met Rachel, she returned back into her apartment and sought out Santana. She flopped down on the bed, curling up to Santana’s side again and sighed happily.
“You’re like a kid in middle school, all smitten cause the girl you’re crushing on talked to you.” Santana said, teasing her blonde friend. “And are you aware that it also makes you a hundred percent more affectionate? You’ve barely let me go since you met her.” She felt Quinn tense up and pull away from her. She grabbed her arm and pulled her back in. “It’s not like I hate it...” she mumbled. A grin spread across Quinn’s face.
“You love me!” she claimed, poking the girl in the ribs.
“I do not!” Santana denied, faking interest in the book she had previously been reading.
“Do too!” Quinn retorted. Santana rolled her eyes. “It’s okay, I kinda love you to.”
“If you weren’t so freaking adorable all the time I’d totally kick you to the curb, you know that right?”

A week later, Quinn and Santana were out grocery shopping. They were right in the middle of having their usual fight of Coke vs. Pepsi when Santana stopped. Just as Quinn was about to claim victory (as she always did), she realised Santana was staring over her shoulder, eyes narrowed.
“What are you...” she started, turning around. “oh.” Just down the aisle was Rachel, accompanied by a tall man with shaggy, brown, obviously styled, hair.
“Who’s the dude?” Santana asked, and Quinn shrugged. She watched them interact, already fearing what she would soon find out. “HEY RACHEL!” Santana called out, waving her arms in the air, grabbing the pair’s attention.
“What are you doing!?” Quinn said through her teeth, waving at Rachel who had noticed them, waving with a big smile on her face.
“Finding out who the dude is!” Santana replied, grabbing Quinn by the arm and dragging her down the aisle. When they arrived they caught the last of the man’s sentence.
“Look, all I’m saying is you really can’t afford to gain any extra weight. How do you think the directors will appreciate that, huh?” Quinn frowned. Rachel was tiny. If anything, she COULD afford to gain weight. She shared a look with Santana that they had shared many times before. The one that said ‘okay, this guy is a douche, how do we get rid of him?’.
“Hey guys!” Rachel greeted her neighbours, glad to be ending the conversation.
“Hey Rach” Quinn said with a smile.
“Who’s your friend?” Santana asked with a complete lack of subtlety. Rachel fidgeted slightly.
“Uh, this is my boyfriend Jesse.” She said, pointing to the man next to her. “Jesse these are my neighbours Quinn and Santana.”
“Yeah, whatever. I’m going to go get stuff for dinner.” He said rudely, turning around and storming off. Quinn watched Rachel as she bit her lip sadly as she watched Jesse leave. Suddenly, she felt the need to ask the girl about her boyfriend, which she knew she couldn’t do in front of Santana without having her make unhelpful comments.
“Santana. You know what? Let’s go with the Pepsi for once okay?” She said with a smile. Santana’s eyes widened.
“For real!?” She asked, surprised. Quinn nodded. “YES! I love you!” Santana said with excitement, grabbing the girl’s head and planting a kiss right on her lips. She then quickly skipped off down the aisle to get her drinks. Quinn shook her head in amusement, turning to face Rachel.
“You know I did wonder if you were together...” the girl started, a small smile on her face. Quinn’s eyes widened.
“Oh we’re not! No, not anymore...” Rachel’s eyebrow raised questioningly. “Really.” Quinn confirmed.
“Right.” Rachel said, unconvinced.
“We used to date. In high school.” Quinn said, unsure as to why she was currently unable to form a proper sentence. “We agreed on just friends. She just...we’re close.”
“You don’t have to explain yourself to me, Quinn.” Rachel said with a kind smile, which had seemed to grow bigger. “Hey, um...sorry abut Jesse. He’s not usually that rude.” She apologised, quieter now. Quinn raised an eyebrow.
“I heard him talking to you...” Quinn said, trying to get across a point that she probably shouldn’t even be worrying about.
“Okay, so yeah... he is usually that rude.” Rachel admitted, looking down.
“If that’s how he treats you...” Quinn started, grabbing Rachel’s attention “He’s not doing it right.” She gave Rachel a small smile, turning her attention back to Santana who was now at her side holding her drinks.
“We ready to move on?” Santana asked, dropping the bottles into the cart. Quinn finally turned her attention back to Santana.
“Yeah.. come on, the store is gonna close soon.” She turned her attention back to Rachel. “I’ll see you...” she said shyly.
“Tonight.” Rachel finished. Quinn looked confused. “Would you two like to come over for dinner?” she asked. Quinn’s face lit up with a shy smile.
“We’d love to.” Quinn answered for them.
“Would we? I’m sorry, when did you become our spokesperson?” the Latina asked, jokingly. She rolled her eyes causing Rachel to laugh.
“Please. You have no social skills, I’ve always been your spokesperson.” Quinn retorted, starting to push their cart down the aisle. She said a quick goodbye to Rachel who was still laughing at the pair.
Rachel watched as the two girls walked down the aisle bickering at each other. She could tell they were nice people, and she definitely wanted to get to know them better. Especially Quinn. She thought back to the few times she’d interacted with the blonde beauty, and recalled a distinct connection. She had never found herself attracted to another woman before, but Quinn... Quinn was definitely attractive. There was something about her that Rachel couldn’t quite put her finger on, that made her feel incredible just to be in her vicinity. And now, with the recent knowledge that Quinn was interested in women... Rachel had butterflies. She jumped as Jesse’s voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Can we leave now?” he asked rudely. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes. With a sigh, she pushed their heavy cart down the aisle. What do I do about Jesse? she asked herself.
