Though I am happy to get the chance to step out of the director's chair and onto the stage for once, recent events and some interesting conversations have gotten me thinking about directory things, specifically about my thoughts on how to run auditions. My favorite audition experience to date was my Margaret audition. I had a prepared piece, as always, and Dave didn't wait until callbacks (as every other director I've auditioned for has) to ask me to try new things with it. It was challenging with regard to my memorization of the piece, but profoundly interesting. It took the monologue places I hadn't expected it to go, which gave me a strong sense of Dave's potential as a director. It made me realize how much I wanted to work with him, and not just to be in the play that he happened to be directing. My favorite part of acting is when a director can bring things out in me that I didn't realize I could do. In the end, because of the sort of part I was playing and the sort of time we had to put the show together, that didn't end up happening so much with Margaret, but that's happened to me with both shows you've directed me in, and thus far, both shows Lenny has directed me in ( ... )
