SLAW 2010 Report

Am now back from my lovely weekend of larping at SLAW. This was kind of my weekend of "games I am not sure about," since in an effort to expand my larping horizons I signed up for all games that were not to my typical inclining. By and large this tactic was a success, and I had a very good weekend overall.

I am sad that I missed Matt's performance as Bucher. It sounds truly epic.

I admit, I wasn't there for that part of the scene, so I don't know how it came off, but Christianity was never intended to come off as a boogeyman (that would have irked me too - it's so cliched.) However, the god of the culture Anders stumbled across was so pissed at Christians (with some reason, but still,) that he would attack anything associated with Christianity. In-character, he's just a bit biased, ya know? The only Christians actually mentioned in character sheets or game materials were the monks who raised Anders, who were pretty good people. The religion just wasn't a good match for him.

The implication I got in the moment was "We all have to suffer because the Christians are dicks." I guess it was the character's monolithic "All Christians are to blame" stance that made me think that. But now that you mention it's just his bias, it makes more sense to me and I am not bothered anymore. It also helps that the Christians who raised Anders were decent and not related to those who were responsible. It seems more realistic to me that in the larger background of the world, some Christians did bad things, some Christians did good things, and characters formed opinions about them based on personal experience. So, objection withdrawn! Thank you for explaining.

One of the themes that emerged as we wrote the game is that there are no villains in this story. Just a lot of people, some of whom come from a different perspective, and some of whom fuck up badly, but none of whom are one-dimensionally evil, or even particularly malicious in their intent. The same goes for cultures on a large scale. You definitely brought up a point well-worth addressing, and I'm glad to have cleared things up somewhat.
