That's a little disappointing about Never Let Me Go because there has been such a build up for this film and to know that it's not bad, but not as good as it probably could have been is kinda sad :( I still want to see it though for sure, if just to see Keira, Carey, and Andrew together in the same movie haha. I haven't read the book so I'll have nothing to compare it to . I've been debating on whether to read the book before I see it or not, IDK *shrug

I don't think it matters whether you read the book or not. A movie should be able to stand on its own anyways. That's why I can't really defend aspects of it just by saying- well, that's what the book is like. What works in a book doesn't always work on screen. Especially for a fairly introspective novel as this. TBH, I thought the kid actors stole the movie for me. I was expecting to see some great stuff from the three main actors but in the end, I thought the childhood portion was the best by far

I saw The Social Network today and I really hope Andrew (and Eisenberg) gets recognized for their performances. If Justin Timberlake gets recognized for it then I'll be baffled because I thought he was great but hardly award worthy.
Anyways, I'm still looking forward to Never Let Me Go. I'll probably have lower expectations that I did before but I'm easy to please and I do love the cast.
Ugh, if JT gets a nomination instead of Andrew, I will be so pissed. There is no way Timberlake was Oscar worthy. He was funny but his character was pretty much a stereotypical asshole.
I agree with your thoughts on Never Let Me Go. I definitely thought the beginning portion with the children was the best part of the film, and it did a really great job at establishing the relationships between the characters. I just didn't feel that connection when the characters were in their adult incarnations, therefore, their story wasn't as emotionally resonant for me. I didn't really buy Cathy and Tommy's affection for each other like I did when they were kids, nor did I really "get" Tommy/Ruth or Cathy and Ruth's friendship. Garfield was very passive as Tommy and I didn't really get a sense of his personality in that middle section. In the final part, though, I thought his scene where they bring his drawings for "evaluation" was quite powerful. The cinematography and score were gorgeous though.
I'd hate to see The Social Network get a huge backlash if it is a truly great film that deserves praise. It would be a shame if come Oscar time a legitimately good film is considered over-hyped. I'm curious to see how well it will go

The child actors were amazing. The whole triangle dynamic worked very nicely at the boarding school, but once they were adults, it just fell flat. I agree that Tommy was just too passive until the last part of the movie. I guess in some way, it shows that Cathy and Tommy have similar and better suited to each other than Tommy/Ruth but seriously, it's kind of a drag to watch an almost romance between such passive characters. I do love the score A LOT too. Rachel Portman is amazing- I think The Cider House Rules is still one of my favorite scores of all time.
Haha, any movie that gets award attention will get a backlash at some point. In this case, it's true that with the kind of enthusiastic reception TSN has been getting, it's almost impossible NOT to be overhyped. When people called something the best of the decade- it's like, well OK.
especially young Cathy and Ruth who look EXACTLY like kid versions of Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley
MTE! That was just freaky. Perfect casting. IA with your other comments too--I think they tried to put the love triangle at the forefront, and it just wasn't compelling enough to me to carry the whole movie, and besides, that's not what the story's really about. I feel like they tried to make the story too 'normal' so the audience wouldn't feel alienated by the alternate-reality universe, but that's what I liked about the book and I feel like they missed the point, a little. And you're right that Ruth was just a little too one-sided; she was clearly meant to be the closest thing to a 'villain' that the story had, and I just didn't like that. I hope it doesn't get entirely shut-out of the Oscars, but I also don't expect it to get much. It came out a bit too early, for one thing. Eh, well, TSN was awesome enough to make up for my disappointment.
I liked MF too. ;) Gloria messing with Jay was excellent.
I still can't get over how ridiculously similar those kids looked to Carey and Keira. (haha, or maybe they're actually clones of them like in this alternate reality)
The love triangle was the weakest part for sure. I mean, it was rather endearing when they were children because, well they're kids and that stuff happens. But once they became adults, it became annoying. The movie definitely picked up steam towards the end when Ruth gives them her blessing and this triangle ends. I think it will get nominated for Best Score at least, which it definitely deserves. And maybe cinematography depending on the competition.
