Thanks for reviewing this! I've always really wanted to see it and it really has nothing to do with facebook. I guess I just finding it amusing when the lives of Ivy Leaguer's get messed up lol I'm evil.
Great review, thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I'm really excited for this film. At first I was like LOL Facebook Movie, like many people, but really it seems like it's a story about entrepreneurship, ego, friendships, and all sorts of other very relevant themes. I think people have to look beyond the "Facebook" thing and look at it as a film about the founding of an empire.
I'm so glad to hear that the performances are good, because I'm really fond of Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield. I also find it interesting that Fincher's directorial hand isn't overly evident, as he's certainly one of the most distinctive directors out there in terms of style. I'd love to see him go gritty again, but I'm glad this film isn't a snoozefest.
It does get an unfair label for being the 'facebook movie' but really, any film about an entrepreneur has to on some level, be about what they created.
I was definitely a little skeptical of Eisenberg at first cause this seemed like another nerdy type-cast role for him, but Zuckerberg is such a unique character that it's a very far cry from the stereotypical Hollywood geek roles (shy, passive, and kind). He did a really good job and personally, I didn't expect him to as sympathetic as he was.
I would say there is only one sequence in the film that really felt quirky enough to be Fincher-esque. It's pretty obvious when you see it cause there's kind of odd camera work and unconventional music. The rest of the film is pretty much Sorkin. Like I said, I actually think this is far more comedic than the trailer suggests. It got a lot of laughs from the audience while I think there's only a few really dramatic scenes.
Wow. I didn't realize it had the potential to be a legit Oscar contender. I didn't even know it was directed by David Fincher. I'm one of the skeptics about this movie. I didn't find the trailer particularly interesting and I think it's still way too early for a movie on the origins of Facebook (but I guess, if not now, when?) and I don't like the main actor. He really bugs me.
If it continues to get really positive reviews and, come February, winds up being one of the 10 nominees, I'll check it out, I guess.
I was kind of skeptical at first too but I figured that David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin couldn't produce anything bad. I didn't really like Jesse Eisenberg much either and from the trailer, I wasn't impressed by him but he turned out to be pretty great in this.
I think it's definitely going to be in the Best Picture field. I'd say it's the frontrunner right now.
Awww, your review is great! Haven't had time to go through LJ lately but I was really looking forward to your review for The Social Network. It sounds like quite a defining film for the generation. I mean, the comparisons to The Godfather etc. sound like a bit of a stretch--- also, I've never seen Rashomon before but it doesn't seem to draw any parallels with TSN? I've heard The Graduate, Citizen Kane, Rashomon, The Godfather for all the comparisons and I can see the rest but...
There are so many skeptics regarding this film! I think you're right, it's probably going to be a favorite with critics but not audiences. It's just that kind of movie where people tend to overlook the themes and relevance because of its subject matter.
I heard a rumor that says that TSN is planning to gun for 3 Best Supporting Nominations for JT, Andrew and Armie Hammer!
Can't wait to see it. It's the only Oscar bait film that's coming out in my area along with the rest of the world.
