Five Reasons Why I Miss The O.C.

I miss this show. Yeah, I kind of still watch Gossip Girl but tbh, that's always been a second-rate replacement for The O.C. To me, this show just had more memorable storylines, characters, writing, music, etc. It started going downhill by Season 3 but the first season is one of my favorite TV seasons ever. You can totally tell from the quality that The O.C. is a Big Four network show as opposed to The CW. So here are five reasons why I miss it!

Number Five

Why don't TV shows have theme songs anymore? Now everything is like Law and Order where they flash the title card and play two notes of music. This was such a great opening credits sequence from the beautiful Southern California scenery to that catchy tune.

Number Four

This is probably the only high school TV show that had interesting adult storylines that weren't pedestrian. I have to say, there were times when the parents' stories were even more interesting to me than the teens'. There was a level of sophistication in the writing of this show that really set it apart from stuff like Gossip Girl (which I watch but is the definition of pedestrian writing). The writers could often incorporate politics, business and other mature issues onto the show, especially in seasons 1 and 2, without looking like they were way in over their heads. Who can forget the badass bitchy Julie Cooper or Sandy Cohen, the guy everyone wanted to be their dad?

Number Three

Oh these two! Even when the show itself started to suck, I never got sick of Seth and Summer. Unlike some other teen shows, the writers seemed to actually care about the couples and treated them, for the most part, with consistency and respect. For all the attempts of this show to be risque, it's surprisingly conservative when it comes to the show's main couples. When you think about it, Summer has only ever had sex with one person. Seth has only slept with Summer and maybe Alex in season 2. And I think that's part of the reason why they're so appealing. They don't treat each other like crap or cheat or do bad things to each other. Their problems were mostly normal teenage issues that people could relate to as opposed to melodrama.

Number Two

Whoever the music director was for this show deserves MAJOR props for finding all those obscure indie artists and always placing the perfect song in the perfect moment. I think half of my iTunes library right now comes from artists that I originally discovered on this show. There are so many great music moments-- Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah in Season 1's finale will probably always be my favorite season closer. And could there have been a more perfect song to finish the series with than Patrick Park's Life is a Song?

Number One

Seth and Ryan, the epic bromance. Complete opposites in personality. Seth is a neurotic loud mouth, Ryan is a quiet brooder. Yet they hit it off from the start and the actors' chemistry makes that believable. Their friendship has always been the stable center of the show's focus. The writers have never jeopardized this relationship. The two have always been best buds. No love triangles or fighting over women, which makes their friendship seem really genuine. Have they ever even had a major falling out? I can't remember one. It's a great credit to the writers that they never succumbed to teen show stereotypes and cliches when it came to these two.
