I feel like E'sere has developed a great deal as a character. His self-realizations - his awareness that he's in large part a construct created to please others - makes him not simpler but more complex. He has opportunity to feel inward conflict about this thing he's done, about what he's invented for himself to be. This scene lays a lot of that out very nicely with words like, 'What people believe is the truth.' Credit to J'lor for bringing E'sere to the brink where he has to say those things, and to E'sere for looking a little dubious about believing them.

I think, had E'sere never come to the islands, he never would have realized any of this. He would have gone on thinking that the way things are at HRW is the only way to be successful, and he never would have realized that who he is has been defined by what his mother/society/everybody else around him expect him to be. It's meeting Aivey, and Derek, and J'lor, that's shown him the alternatives--and confused the hell out of him because every one of them expects something different out of him. He's figuring out he can't please everybody after all, and on the one hand it's a horrible thing for him to go through--all that uncertainty--but in the end I think it will be good for him--whoever he ends up following: Derek and Aivey, J'lor, the mainland, or *gasp* himself.
