Kennedy's Apartment, New York City, April 2002 (Tuesday, Fandom Time)

Aug 08, 2011 23:13

It had been... really dry on the gossip scene for months now, at least if you were Kennedy and your gossip scene consisted of news from the Hellmouth. In point of fact there hadn't been much of anything at all since some brief rumblings of a demon nest six weeks ago, and some vague and weird thing about a fast-food joint the month before that (and ( Read more... )

Sookie had never been to New York. Honestly, she could count on a few fingers how many times she'd even crossed the Mason-Dixon Line, and all of those instances had been decidedly Fandom's influence.

Needless to say, she was somewhere between shell-shocked and starry-eyed by the time they arrived at Kennedy's building. Sookie kept staring out windows, eyes wide, and was trying really hard not to just burst with excitement at random New Yorkers. This was why poor Bobby had gotten stuck with the luggage. Because Sookie was having a squee attack.

"Oh my goodness, we're so high up," Sookie breathed as she peered at the floor number on the elevator again, then scurried over to knock on the door she really, really hoped was Kennedy's. She hadn't double-checked with her special sense because frankly New York had already started to give her a little bit of a headache. SO MANY PEOPLE.

"It's your first trip to the city," Bobby reasoned. "'Doing everything', is pretty much required." Just so long as it was spread over multiple days. "It'll be interesting to see the differences between your world and mine," he noted to Kennedy, taking in the view.

"Do demon nests stir up trouble in the financial district for you too?" Kennedy asked Bobby flippantly.

She nudged the guest room door open with her hip and lugged the bags inside, setting them down as soon as possible so she could shrug broadly. "It's just little ol' me here, so nobody's gonna argue with my sleeping arrangements," she assured Sookie. "Dad's on some business cruise this week anyway, and my stepmom tries to know as little as possible about what I get up to. It's cool." She shook her head playfully at Sookie. "Seriously, chill. It'll be fine."

"I don't wanna chill," Sookie said, nodding towards Bobby. "That's his thing."

See? She could pun, too.

"But more importantly, this is gorgeous. New York is glamorous," she decided with a sigh. "I know I sound extra country-girl, but seriously, New Orleans and Dallas don't compare, let alone Shreveport."

"I dunno about the financial district, but N'astirh once opened up a portal from a demon dimension on top of the Empire State Building," Bobby offered, tugging Sookie back out in to the main area of the apartment. "Oh my god, I need a hot dog like, right now," he declared dramatically.

She'd been expecting this sort of reaction out of Sookie; it wasn't all that different from Tara's first reaction to the city. "No big," she assured Sookie. "New York's New York, you know? It's kinda its own whole thing. Whole overwhelming-if-you're-not-used-to-it thing, but I've gotten that reaction from people before. Also, lucky for the bottomless pit here--" pot, kettle, Kennedy-- "its whole thing includes hot dog carts everywhere."

She paused and shot Bobby a quizzical look.

"...seriously, on top of the Empire State Building?"

"Lemme just grab the sapphire Karla gave me," Sookie said, ducking into the other room again. "Headaches do not make for fabulous sight-seeing."

"Seriously," Bobby nodded, looking a bit sheepish at forgetting about the sapphire. In his defense, he was eager to get out there and start showing Sookie around his city.

...Well, okay, this was Kennedy's, and he was content to leave most of the tour-guide-ing to her, but there was still that pride there. "I will say this for the 'time stuff'. It can be a headache to figure out, but I'm not complaining about the fact that we get to spend a week here and I'll be back in Fandom in time for class."

Kennedy, for her part, looked contrite (not that it did much good when Sookie couldn't see her), having only just now realized that Sookie's telepathy could be a factor to worry about in a city this size. Yes, thanks for showing up fashionably late, Kennedy.

Bailey shuffled over to sniff cautiously at Bobby's foot, and Kennedy watched indulgently.

"It works out that way sometimes," she agreed. "Other times it just kinda sucks, but now? Bonus."

Bobby grinned and picked up the rabbit, skritching him behind the ears a couple times. "Really hope there's no demon attacks scheduled though. I mean, there's no way we'd fit that in what with Sookie's itinerary."

Kennedy laughed. "It's not like I schedule these things! Anyway, it's been totally quiet on the demon front for, like, forever around here. Which is weird, but I guess my world has earned at least one year where nothing horribly evil goes on."

God, it was nice to have no clue.

"Besides, we gotta make this trip count for her, right?"

"We're going to have to hit up a tacky souvenir shop at some point," Bobby decided.

"Those are universal to every New York City ever," Kennedy agreed. "So fill me in! What've I been missing back on the crazy island?"

"Oh, ugh," Bobby made a face. "There was this thing with this crazy-ass space rock that made a bunch of people, well. Crazy. Annndmutatedthemintocreepygreymonsters," he added in a rush.

"Jesus!" Kennedy yelped. "Holy shit, everybody came out of that okay, right?"

"Yeah," Bobby nodded. "Wings got hit with it- for a while I was worried it was this... thing... that's popped up in a few mutants back home, but it turned out not to be. I haven't seen him since everything went down," and don't think he wasn't just the tiniest bit bitter about that, "but radio says people've been getting back to normal."
