You totally had me at the castle-made-of-castles thing. I mean, I read the whole post (yeah, fairy tales have been seriously sanitized; apparently children now are far too delicate for rape and amputations and mutilation), but that made me squeal. Almost.
what is the main street architecture supposed to be based on: fin de siecle Indiana. seriously.
who comes up with these names for the sections of the park: back when walt disney had his own tv show in the fifties, the different parts of the show were named adventureland, frontierland, fantasyland and tomorrowland, to match the different kinds of stories disney imagined kids would want to hear/his own weird obsessions.
As for fairy tales: try reading the Grimm bros. in GERMAN. It goes from "laaaadeedaa, murder and torture~" to "hi kids! how are we going to politically, socially, and mentally galvanize you today via emotional trauma? teehee!". And they do all this with extremely cool, overly-poetic german that makes it all the creepier. (For the record: to date the creepiest to me is probably Rotkaepchen ("little red riding hood") because the ending involves a little girl being served meat from the wolf, as hes ROASTED ALIVE ON A SPIT).

Oh, and apparently Main Street, U.S.A. is supposed to be Victorian(ish?), huh... at least according to the internet.

"Walt Disney based Main Street on his own memories of turn-of-the-century Marceline, Missouri."
