Jack watched Ianto. He’d come into work and was quietly going about his ordinary jobs. He had a massive bruise spanning his entire left cheek and there were finger marks on his chin. He wasn’t walking quite the same either and Jack knew why.
No matter what they’d done, Jack had always been careful. He’d given Ianto the pain he wanted but never actually really hurt him. Never. But that brute in the park hadn’t cared about Ianto.
“Jack, a word,” said Owen, suddenly, edging into Jack’s office.
Jack took a deep breath and leaned against his desk. He could still see Ianto through the window.
“What is it, Owen?”
“It’s…er…tea boy. The girls are worrying and…not that I care…but I am the doctor and well…those bruises on his face. Well, is he all right? The girls are worried.”
“He’s…he’s…well, no he’s not okay but…but I don’t know how to help him.”
“What’s wrong with him?”
“He’s…lost and falling and I don’t know how to save him.”
Owen looked Jack square in the eye. “You saved me.”
Jack opened and closed his mouth several times, not quite sure what to say. Owen just shrugged.
“Think about it,” he said and walked away.
Again, Jack watched Ianto. He watched the slow, stilted way he moved. He watched the wince of pain whenever he had to blink or speak. He watched from all the hurt. He watched the flicker in his body when someone spoke to him. Jack watched the sadness in his eyes. He watched the emptiness.
He had to save Ianto. He had to make him okay. There was something about the young man, something which made Jack ache. He wanted him. He craved him. He could have his body. He had so many times. But that wasn’t enough. He wanted Ianto. He wanted the real Ianto, the one beneath the grief and the sadness. He wanted the Ianto beneath the pain.
He wanted to save Ianto, to take away the pain. He wanted to save Ianto from it. He was going to save Ianto. No matter what. He was going to be his hero.
