I watch game shows when I don't want to think either. Thinking sucks sometimes. Family Feud and Wheel of Fortune are awesome. Jeopardy's good when you want to think a little bit but not too much.
I can totally relate to your writing group experience. Personally, I find it very hard to switch between writing fic and original stuff. Right now I've been writing a lot more original work - which does involve more showing instead of telling, being very careful with word choice, and using fancy literary devices - than fic. And because I've been writing at a higher level, when I go back to writing fics I feel like I'm watering things down and I don't like that. It makes me feel like my fics are inadequate. It's hard and frustrating.
I've developed a bit of a crush on Twitch after watching season seven of SYTYCD. He is so awesome. Neil is too. And Kent is so adorable. *sigh* A new Canadian season just got under way and I'm super excited about it.
Yay for SYTYCD-Canada! I have to start downloading now that the US version is over - plus, I've almost figured out how to do double screens by hooking up my flatscreen desktop monitor to my laptop so my friend and I don't have to cram onto the sofa to share the laptop. Now, she can watch on her couch and me on mine! We are v. excited and hoping to see our crush, Nico, again. (Plus, we share hate of the hostess lady who doesn't move her top lip, and my friend has an irrational hatred of Blake, the judge. Share tidbits if you feel like it!)
I'm glad it's not just me, I'm definitely going to start reading more to see if I can get serious about the original fic. Difficult after years of writing about other people's characters.
Twitch is awesome! We saw Step Up 3D and totally squeed in the theater when he came on.
Maybe, it is YA. I could send you some, see if your kidlets get it. It's mainly timeline/explanation confusion, so I have to tweak it. But I welcome advice!
There is a piddling romance, and a character that is gay, at this stage anyway as a side character. I can't remember if 13 y/o's are into the romance yet. I will send to you and you can peruse.
I have no words of wisdom re: your friend at work. What she's going through is tough, and yeah, people sort of forget about you. I have 2 friends that knew I was sick (cuz I told them) and not once during the 6 months of chemo did they call or e-mail. And that sort of bugged me. I'm still in sort of contact, but it's not the same. I didn't expect the constant barrage of gifts, etc. But an e-mail or phone call is nice. Not every day, but once a week or every other week...
As for the writing group... go you. Keep at it. First of all, why don't they give out hard copies. I recall, when I was in college - when we took creative writing courses, we often had to give out a copy to everyone. It makes sense, because it's hard to digest by just hearing. As for formatting... well, try typing in word or open office or some such other program. Then you'll get the hang of paragraphs, etc. again :)
She was doing a lot better on Thursday and on Friday when I texted her. I haven't forgotten about her! I talk/email or txt message her every day! I just don't always get around to making her a card. But I'm getting back on top of it, especially since she's starting chemo. I also told her if she wears the hot pink wig she bought as a gag to work that I would dye my hair pink for her. (I'm thinking of getting one of those clip on extensions and making my other boss wear it, if she does it.)
At the first 'normal fic' meeting, there were hard copies from one guy and the other two were fill-ins so they didn't have them, but apparently the sci-fi meeting wants you to read before you come and no one did. I think I'm going to look for a more basic creative writing group to get back into it. I need to surf the web more.
I know you didn't forget her. I hope I didn't imply that I thought you did. You can't be there for her all the time. She really needs a group to support her. Between family and friends (rl & lj!) I was so blessed and so cared for. I rarely had time for self pity. It was there, but not as often as it could have been had it not been for friends and family.
Hi! glad you ventured out to the writing group... you are braver than I am! my only brave moment recently was trying deep fried pickles while visiting a friend in Huntington, WV (salty, not that good... the deep fried hotdog was pretty awesome though, along with the deep fried okra and deep fried hush puppies... they fry everything, it is quite scary, Jamie Oliver failed completely in his mission to make them eat healthy!)
OMG, I love deep fried pickles, but I can't cook them and only one restaurant serves them around here. Anything deep fried is delicious. I also love deep fried green beans and I hate green beans. Yay, you! Even if it wasn't your taste, you tried it!
