So, I did a little delving into the ins and outs of publishing children's books. More specifically, the books I'm referring to are called picture books, as opposed to chapter books or young adult. There is a vast amount of very useful information, and it would take me forever to go through all of it, but here's the gist of what I've picked up so ( Read more... )

You do excellent research, at times I fail when it comes to researching these things so I'm very happy for your post. :D

I had no idea that counting pages would be that tricky, lol. And to be honest, I still don't really understand what that person was saying. It's a good thing I'm not publishing picture books any time soon then as I wouldn't know how to format the books I'd be printing. I suppose editors and the like have to study for these things. (I guess I'm just showing my ignorance ;) )

Getting work published is even more difficult than I thought, so again best of luck as I really want to see you succeed. :)

Thanks again for the luck! I don't think it's really necessary for a writer to know exactly how the pages are counted. But it does give the writer an idea as to how a story is going to fit if it's believed to be, say, 17 pages. (And I say "believe" because it is the editor who ultimately decides which words go on which pages).

Keep in mind, too, that if necessary, editors can make more two-page spreads to fill in extra pages, divide the text differently, or any other number of tricks I'm sure they have up their sleeves to make sure a good story fits. So you're right, it's something that's more important for the editors to understand than the writers. But it might help to keep it in the back of your mind while writing.
