A suggestion: try to keep an eye out for what stores are open on Thursday evening -- and don't shop at them on Friday, either, no matter what sale deals they have going on then. If you want to send a message, it has to be more than "if you do this, it won't work as well" -- and be more "if you do this, it will hurt and you'll lose more than you gain."
I pretty much never hit Black Friday in the first place, so while I will likely neither shop Thursday nor Friday, I won't end up impacting the numbers, either.
I dread crowds with a deep and passionate dread, so I stay away from Black Friday sales already. But I will try to get everything I need for Thanksgiving tomorrow.
I hate shopping even when the stores are empty, but I hate it much more when I have to fight crowds and stand in lines, so I would never go near a big box store on Black Friday. Even if I liked shopping, Thanksgiving is the only major holiday that I really get to spend with chosen family, and I certainly wouldn't waste those hours shopping.
I don't get the whole "Black Friday" event - I would never need any TV or other big-ticket purchase so much that I'd brave that level of craziness. :(
Is it ok, however, if I go out to eat at the local Chinese restaurant which has always been open 365 days a year and will feed me tasty Peking Duck rather than my suffering through a meal of foods I don't really enjoy? :)

If they're open after 3 p.m. on Thursday, that's not as cool.
